CIAC Indoor State Open Recap

Boys Relays

4x200m

The day opened wildly and crazily with Raphael Hawkins getting the stick for Hillhouse's anchor in 3rd place and a couple seconds behind Hall and close to Greenwich. After watching the video replay countless times, I still don't know how Hawkins was able to make up 20 meters entering the final turn to run down Hall for the win by 0.01. One for the ages. Another strange element of the 4x200m was that Sheehan got the bronze while running in the first and least fast of the four sections. which also included 5th place Naugatuck.

4x400m

Hall may have gotten run down in the 4x200m at the beginning of the day by Hillhouse, but at the end of the day and needing at least a 2nd to pass the Academics for the team title, Hall made sure of matters with a dominating win, while Staples, Naugatuck, Bloomfield, Greenwich, and New Milford fought it out for the rest of the points that would shuffle the team placements a bit at the end.

4x800m

Staples came in as only the 9th seed after a 4th in Class LL, but top flyer Jalen St. Fort was back in action and Ben Lorenz was also available for the squad along with Zachary Taubman and Rory Tarsy. The Wreckers conceded the early lead to Conard and Gavin Sherry, but they took command on the third leg and ran away with the gold as Hall with Tobias Ruffo on the anchor got the silver and Callum Sherry rebounded to pass Aidan Puffer for the bronze in the battle between Conard and Manchester.

Sprint Medley Relay

The top three teams in the SMR all had big-time runners in the 800m anchor leg that makes up half of the event's distance, as 1000m champ Eamon Burke closed for Xavier, 600m champ Jeremy Rivera was the final guy for Prince Tech, and Francis Porrini was the finisher for Bristol Central. Burke inherited a 20 meter lead that Rivera quickly closed down, but Burke pulled away after and Porrini came up to pass Rivera before being repassed near the end. Hall picked up a valuable 4 points in 4th while winning the second section as Fairfield Ludlowe and Windsor grabbed the last two scoring places from that same section.
