Previewing the CIAC State Open Championship

Boys Distance

800m

Meet Record: 1:50.63     Last Year's Winner:  Ken Little (Derby) 1:52.05

None of the seeded times for state's top 7 runners come from one of the Class meets that the seed times are compiled from, so the story here is a little murky. One thing that is clear is that the Greater Hartford and Class M champ Stephen Sutton of Tolland will be the favorite off of a season's best of 1:54.52. Right behind is States Indoor 1000m champ and 2018 runner-up and Class L winner Miller Anderson of William Hall at 1:54.88. Xavier's Class L ruuner-up Pierre Sylvain and Branford's Class MM champ Marzio Mastroianni will chip in with Middletown's Bristol Central winner Jose Ramirez, Suffield's Nick Sinofsky, and Stonington's Rhys Hammond to insure that this race is just brutal.

1600m

Meet Record: 4:08.42     Last Year's Winner:  William Landowne (Staples) 4:12.60

What a race. Trey Cormier of William Hall is the #2 top steeplechaser in the country (sorry TX, but 3K is the real distance, notwithstanding NBNO), and he is the top seed in the 1600m after edging out States 3200 Indoor winner Robbie Cozean of Xavier in the Class L race in 4:17.77. States Indoor and Middletown Invite and States Indoor 1600m and Class LL winner Travis Martin of Wilbur Cross is still top ranked at 4:16.33. There is also a plethora of CT guys who could pull a not unsurprising pseudo-upset including Danbury's Malcom Going,  Conard's Gavin Sherry, Shelton's Robert Dillon, and East Lyme's Samuel Whittaker, so this should be a highlighter.

3200m

Meet Record: 9:00.20     Last Year's Winner:  Dan Nichols (Danbury) 9:09.91

In a totally unreal situation, two freshmen are the top seeds in the CT 3200m after Manchester's Aidan Puffer won the Class LL race in 9:10.13 and Conard's Gavin Sherry was 2nd in 9:14.17. The elders may still have a big say here though, as Xavier's Robbie Cozean ripped off a 8:54.78 for 3rd and William Hall's Trey Cormier went 8:59.72 for 5th at Loucks, so the gold may be theirs for the taking. Wilbur Cross's Travis Martin is also in the running, but the 1600-3200 double is never easy.
