September Startups: How Much Will Teams Grow in Two Months?

Boys Summary

From the numbers, it appears that larger schools can generally expect to bump their speed ratings up anywhere from 5 to 10 points during the season, the equivalent of 15 to 30 seconds per runner for 5K times. For the smaller Class C and D teams that have a lot of development to do during the season, the boost in speed ratings tends to be much greater, about double the increase of the larger teams.

But every team has a different situation starting out the season and how it develops as the year progresses. If a small team is missing some key veterans early on and also needs some young guys to step in to fill in the holes at the back of a lineup, it may be the perfect candidate for a 40 or 50 point boost. An intact big team coming off a summer of heavy workouts may not see much of any rise in the TR during the season.

For all of the championship teams, the road to victory required some advancement of the season's TR last year, though Burnt Hills probably could have won the B crown without any boost. Hopefully, all teams should be able to recite the Beatles' "Got to admit it's getting better, a little better all the time," lyrics from Paul McCartney while also hoping that John Lennon's response, "It can't get no worse," never comes into play.
