NY Boys Weightathlon ThrowDown

Outdoor Quadrathlon ThrowDown

Kevin Cetin - Massapequa

The difference between the top four guys in the ITD for the indoor shot put and weight throw had been 69 points, and the battle in the ultimate showdown of the Outdoor Quadrathlon ThrowDown was even closer at 44 points between the spring season's Fab 4. All placed in the top 6 of the OOTTD, so the question was who would get a big enough kick from their lowest scoring event to push through for the win in the OQTD.

Kevin Cetin had finished 2nd in the OOTTD and was paced by an NY #2 discus throw. Joseph Ryan was 3rd in the OOTTD and had the NY #2 hammer throw. Mark Przybocki had an NY #5 shot put and was 4th in the OOTTD. Derek Ferraro occupied the OOTTD's 5th spot and had the NY #4 HT.

Mark Przybocki - Burke Catholic

If you added up the standard three big hitters of shot put, discus, and hammer throw, the Massepequa guys Kevin Cetin and Joseph Ryan would have been well in the lead, with Derek Ferraro and Mark Przybocki a ways back. Przybocki's NY #7 toss at the Section 9 State Qualifier of 163-6 made the contest a whole lot closer though. Cetin got just 338 points from his javelin toss, but it was enough to win him the gold ring at 2796. Przybocki finished 4 points back at  2792 for the silver ring. Ryan held off Ferraro for the bronze ring by a scant 7 points, 2759 to 2752.

Jakob Morrissey - Riverdale-Kingsbridge

The rest of the field in the OQTD were more than 250 points in back of the top four guys. Kingston's Jack McDonough had just one top 50 ranking, but his NY #14 in the hammer throw led him to 5th place overall at 2499. Harrison's Justin Altamuro finished in the top 50 of the rankings in all events with his best place at NY #11 in his lowest scoring event, the javelin, and he took 6th place in the OQTD at 2434. Also in the mix at the 7th and 8th spots were St. Anthony's Alec Wargo and Riverdale Kingsbridge's Jakob Morrissey.

All of the OQTD contestants were from the downstate area stretching from Section 9 and below. That is the area where the athletes get the best chance to throw their weights around. Eight guys had the shot put as their top scoring event, but the discus also was tops for eight guys, and the hammer throw was the best for three contestants.  That left Minisink Valley's Peter Seymour to proclaim the javelin as his money event, as his NY #4 throw of 167-11was his big earner. Pine Bush's Matthew Heilig had the top throw of 180-9 in his group at the American JavFest meet for the NY #2 best, but the discus was still a little bit better scoring power for him.

Onward to the 2019 Weightathlon ThrowDown, and hopefully next year there will be a few more guys taking some turns with the hammer throw and javelin. Steven Vasile, Tyler Doty, Anthony Harrison, Matthew Heilig, Justin Altamuro, and Andy Pietrantoni will all be back to throw their shots, discuses, and other dangerous objects into the ring.
