Outdoors Optional Triathlon ThrowDown
Michael Gabriel - Greenwich
The Outdoors Optional Triathlon ThrowDown allowed the throwers to chuck in their three best scoring marks from the quartet of the shot put, discus, javelin, and hammer throw during the spring. There were a few wrinkles that made the guy's OOTTD different from the girl's.
First, whereas for the girls only one contestant used a javelin score, and that was because she didn't have a hammer throw score, six of the guys counted javelin marks in their total, and in three cases it was because the lowly javelin (in IAAF scoring) was a better score than the hammer throw. All of the OOTTD guys did include the shot put and discus.
Second, the top four outdoor shot putters were from western NY and all just had the shot put and discus on their resumes. The top discus thrower plus the fourth best guy were also in the same boat. Because of that we'll include a mini double-event Leaders with Two Events ThrowDown contest for the six of them.
Anthony Ray was on top at 1861 (989 + 872), Steven Vasile was 2nd at 1848 (891 + 957), Jake McPherson was 3rd at 1845 (973+872), Tyler Doty was 4th at 1813 (974 + 839), John Surdej was 5th at 1787 (1012 + 775), and Andrew Palermo was 6th at 1760 (884 +876) . Shot scores are noted first and discus second in parentheses.
Besides Surdej in the shot put and Vasile in the discus being champions doing just two events, there was also a one-event state leader, Iona Prep's Robert Greer in the javelin. The lone top guy for an event who qualified for the OOTTD by doing the shot, discus, and hammer throw was the ITD winner Michael Gabriel, who threw the HT 202-7 at NBN to take 6th place there.
Gabriel's big hammer throw helped to earn him the gold ring in the OOTTD with a balanced scoring line with three scores in the 800s to total 2573. Kevin Cetin had the NY #2 discus and #7 hammer throw, and that was enough to take the silver ring with a 2458 total. Until Gabriel's throw at Nationals, Cetin's teammate at Massapequa Joseph Ryan
had led the state by a huge amount in the hammer throw at 199-7, and
the HT helped to bring him the bronze ring in the OOTTD with a score of 2324
overall.
Anthony Harrison - Ramapo
4th place went to Mark Przybocki with a 2337 total helped by the
NY #5 shot put and the NY #7 javelin toss. Przybocki was one of only two
guys among the top 10 javelin throwers who qualified for the OOTTD's
top 20 cut-off list. 5th place finisher Derek Ferraro of Iona Prep leaned on the hammer throw with an NY #4 toss of 185-8 to finish at 2271. Ramapo's Anthony Harrison had the NY #3 throw in the discus, and with a NY #13 shot throw he had enough to grab the 6th spot, a little ahead of Iona Prep's Luke Tobia and his NY #3 HT and Arlington's Spencer Thomas with his NY #7 discus throw.
