The 12 Biggest New York Marks From New Balance Nationals This Year

St. Anthony's DMR Becomes First NY Team Under 10-mins

Who: Saint Anthony's

What Place:  2nd Place in the Championship DMR

Why: A tactical mile leg for the two pre-race favorites saw Saint Anthony's make up their three second deficit heading into the anchor exchange within less than a lap.  Once there, Mason Gatewood began to battle with Brodey Hasty (Brentwood), who came in with a mile best of 4:00.05 and Sam Affolder (Loudoun Valley), with a best of 4:08.67.  It was a bold move for Gatewood, who had never previously broken 4:15 for the mile Indoors.

The move worked, as Gatewood was in the perfect position when Hasty made his strike.  Gatewood recognized the move and responded, passing Affolder in the process.  Hasty had demonstrated his speed the year before, when he kicked away to the Indoor 3200m title, but Gatewood kept pace with the standout from TN, and pushed through the line right behind, bringing his team to a victory in 9:58.36.

That's the fastest time ever run by a New York team, Indoors or Outdoors.  It also set the National Catholic School Record, breaking the previous mark held by Cardinal O'Hara, set in 2014.  In addition to Gatewood, Saint Anthony's had the second fastest split of the day on the 1200m leg, with Matt Payamps, book-ending the best DMR New York has ever had.
