The Armory - It's not something you are likely to see coming, but when it happens, you pay attention. Carlon Hosten (Taft Educational Campus) dropped 0.11secs in the 55m Final at the PSAL 'City" Championships to take the Gold Medal. He had matched his Personal Best in the trials, at 6.38. That's just off what he ran when he took third at Millrose. Some may have thought he went too fast in the trials. They would have been wrong.
Exploding out of the blocks in the final, the senior from the Bronx got the jump on the defending Champion, Mike Miller JR (Christopher Columbus). Miller had a breakout race of his own last year, in this very same final, but couldn't keep up with the Senior from Taft.
Hosten crossed the line at 6.28, the first time a NY athlete has ever dipped under 6.30 in the event, including en route times. It break the PSAL record set by Jermaine Brown (Medgar Evers), which also was tied for the State Record with Jarmiene Holloway (Marshall).
This also makes Hosten the fastest athlete in the country right now, with a new US #1. The next fastest mark is a 6.30, run way back in December. At the beginning of the season, Hosten made it known he was searching for the 55m and 300m State Records. Consider himself halfway there. Hosten will be contesting both the 55m and 300m at States, trying to match the double achieved by Ramone Newland (South Shore) last year.
