Complete Millrose Mile Preview, Plus Four More Things We're Excited For

44th Annual New Balance High School Boys' Mile

Favorites

Breakdown: The likely Millrose win will come from the four guys with PR's under 4:10.  But there is more to the story than the seeds would say.  Dalton Hengst is the top seeded athlete, winning the Mile, and second in the 1000m at the VA Showcase.  However, Hengst training over the time since then may have been interrupted by his sudden school change.  Also, Hengst came second to none other than Josh Hoey in that 1000m in VA, where Hoey broke Top 10 All-Time in the country in the event.  He is fit for any type of race that should play out, but sit-and-kick - he is no slouch.

For the remaining two, there is some bragging rights closer to home on the line.  For Scott Thompson, his teammate Brodey Hasty will be competing in the Unseeded Professional Mile.  Could Brentwood sweep Mile Titles?  Could Hasty go Sub-4, while his teammate grabs the coveted HS Title?  And for Sam Affolder, there is some family history on the line.  His brother was kicked at the line here two years ago after celebrating early.  He made up for it a year later with a new meet record and a win, and Sam Affolder would like to join him.  It would be the first time two members of the same family have won the title.

Challengers

Breakdown: Coming off a very strong DMR run at the Yale Classic, Saint Anthony's brings their bookends here.  Gatewood was caught at the line for his qualifier, but has a faster PR than the athlete that nipped him.

Dark Horses

Breakdown: Plenty of talent in the backranks of the seeds, and 4:15 is not to be underestimated if this becomes a kickers race. Shea Weilbaker is not afraid to lead the race, and Isaiah Claiborne has the fastest 800m PR in the field.
