Kelsey Chmiel Drops US No. 1 3K at New York Relays

Distance stud Kelsey Chmiel crushed a new US No. 1 mark in the 3K Friday at the New York Relays.

The time was only 7.02 seconds off the current 3K sophomore class national record mark of 9:21.99, set by Julia Stamps of Santa Rosa California back in 1995. 

The Saratoga Springs (NY) High sophomore ran 9:29.01 to gap the rest of the field by over 30 seconds. Her time is a new US No. 1 mark by more than 10 seconds. The previous US No. 1 mark this year was held by Sunset Oregon (Or.) High's Ember Strattonwho ran a very impressive 9:54.71 just one week ago at the Oregon Relays.

Chmiel's time converts to 10:10.83 for 3200m and 10:14.36 for 2-miles. This race was also Chmiel's 2017 outdoor debutChmiel is already the sophomore and freshman national class record holder for the 3K indoors.

She broke the sophomore national class record after her 9:26.28 this past winter at the New York State Indoor Track and Field Championships
