Has 2017 Trumped 2016? A Comparative Look At The State Rankings

Girls Events

What Event was big in 2016? While the State Meet may have been all about that girls 3000m, where a record 7 girls went sub-9, the hurdles dominated the conversation in 2016.  Only two girls have been able to match what 9 girls were able to do the year before. Alyssa Sandy (Paul Robeson), the top hurdler Indoors, went on to break the Outdoor State Record in the event later that year.

What Event is big in 2017? There are quite a few evens taking a rise already, with much of the season to go.  The 1000m is stronger than usual, but it's that Long Jump with the big lead.  Lanae-Tava Thomas (Rush-Henrietta) has put in a Top 3 All-Time mark already, with plenty of competition behind her.  Most interesting is the Shot Put, with even more girls over 40' than last year, despite the Outdoor State Record going down, as well as an Indoor #2 All-Time mark by Alexis Daniels (Binghamton).

What's the best potential event at States? That 1500m looks to be loaded.  And that is even including some of the athletes missing.  Katherine Lee (Shoreham) broke her ankle at Millrose, and with her qualifier only days after, will be forgoing her Junior State Meet.  Jess Lawson (Corning) is returning from injury, and may be a bit off her 4:26 top seed, but will still be in the mix.  Despite that, you have four girls at 4:35 or better, with three more who can convert miles even faster than that.  This could be a race for the ages.
