New York Strikes Gold At The Rio Olympics


With the Olympic Games coming to a close yesterday afternoon, we give you a recap of all the New York Action!  We came away with some impressive marks, and more importantly, plenty of gold medals.  Find the highlights below.

Women's 400m Hurdles


New York State Record Holder, and Benjamin Cardozo Alum, Dalilah Muhammad became the first American to ever win the Gold Medal over the 400m Hurdles.  The World Leader heading into the Games, Muhammad made her way through the rounds with ease.  In the final, she let loose a blistering pace out of the blocks, not letting up until she crossed the line in 53.13.


Women's 4x400m


Two New York Alumni found themselves as teammates, after previously competing in the 400m earlier in the week.  In the 400m final, Phyllis Francis (Catherine MacAuley HS) took fifth overall in 50.41, while Natasha Hastings (AP Randolph HS) was one spot off the podium in 4th, at 50.34.

The pair comprised one half of the 4x400 for Team USA, winning the Gold Medal in 3:19.06.



Honorable Mention - Molly Huddle


While it may not be a medal for Molly Huddle (Elmira-Notre Dame HS), she was able to be part of the fastest 10,000m ever recorded.  For her efforts, despite finishing in 6th place, Huddle smashed the American Record set by Shalane Flanaghan, bringing the mark down to 30:13.17.


Honorable Mention - Men's 1500m


While Matt Centrowitz may have hailed from Maryland, Matthew Centrowitz, SR. is a New Yorker through and through.  The son of the New York State Record holder in the mile took home the Gold Medal over the 1500m, the first such medal since 1904.


Honorable Mention - Women's 20k Racewalk


Maria Michta-Coffey (Sachem HS), may not have have medaled, but at 22nd place, she represents the second highest finish ever in the event by an American Woman, as well as the second fastest time ever recorded at the Olympic Event.
