The Great State Meet Preview: Outdoor 2016

Girls 3000m

Event Info: 2015 Winner: Bella Burda (Arlington) 9:38.14, State Record: 8:58.48, Meet Record: 9:16.63, State Qualifier Mark (FAT): 10:04.44 (D1) - 10:25.84 (D2)

State of the Action

Much like the 1500m, what a field we have here.  Three girls under 9:40 at the State Meet is unheard of, and when you put them all together, it will take much more than that to grab the win.  Kelsey Chmiel and Diana Vizza both like to run from the front, and keep the pace honest.  If they don't, Jess Lawson has won many a State Meet on the last lap kick, including a Spring 3000m State Title in 2014.  Abbey Wheeler held onto the leaders indoors for much of the race, and will do so here as well, pulling down her personal best, and putting her in contention for the win.

There are plenty of girls who are running times that have won State Meets in the past, but are down the list in 2016.  But for athletes like Ella Ketchum, Katherine Lee, and Sam Levy, who have been running those marks well ahead of the competition, they could be right back in the thick of things when running against girls their own speed.  Hard to count anyone out.
