The 2016 Glenn D. Loucks Games Preview Blowout - A Viewer's Guide

Girls 800m

Event Info: Friday - 5:50pm

State of the Action

While the 400m may be Watson's first love, the 800m may arguably her best event.  It doesn't hurt to win a World Youth Title against the best of the globe last summer.  But the contenders are not far away, as Danae Rivers has reached similar company under 2:06 for the two lap run.  The CT standout, and Penn signee, was once a winner of the mile herself at Loucks, and will be looking to add another trophy to the mix.  It a tall order to find a meet where a 2:09 performer is an "and then," but this is Loucks.  Sage Hurta is looking to drop her personal best by significant marks here.  Recently, she opened her 800m in under 60secs two days after competing in the mile at Penn Relays, no doubt training for the double at Loucks.  Putting that kind of speed into the first half of the race is the only way to knock Watson out of her comfort zone of "sit and kick," and it looks to bring out the best in both.  Olivia Arizin got a strong taste of NY competition this winter at Ocean Breeze, and will look to be in the mix.  The X-Factor is Anna Flynn, who missed most of her indoor season with injury.  If the rest has treated her well, she could be right back in the thick of things.  Rounding out the field is Katie Devore, whose anchor split has been in the territory of the competition, and also garnered an indoor National Title to boot.
