NY 1000m All-Time List
Rochester, NY - After picking up the sophomore record last year, Sammy Watson (Rush-Henrietta) moves on to the Junior State Record, winning the 1000m. What's even more impressive is that she did it against limited competition, trouncing the field by more than 10 seconds. Not only is that the only class record not run on a banked track for 1000m, it's also the largest winning margin of the bunch.
Watson breaks the state record held by Shola Lynch, originally one of the kids on Sesame Street, before moving onto filmaking in her adult career, was one of the PSAL's most renowned track athletes of the 80's. Her record stood as one of the longest standing in the state.
Likewise, Abbey Wheeler (Elmira), running at the Section 4 Class Championships, went NY #24 All-Time in the event, winning by nine seconds. Watson already holds the State Record overall for the 1000m, depending who you ask, consider Mary Cain's record status.
