A Regional To Remember - NXN-NY Coverage Blowout

Boys Team Race

State of the Action: Liverpool came into the meet as the outlying favorite, and lived up to the hype.  In addition to the near course record by lead man Ben Petrella, their next three were also within the top 20.  They head to Portland as one of the frontrunners in the country, with a solid shot at an individual podium spot as well.

In second place, there is quite a mess.  Two New York powerhouses came down to the closest of margins, between East Aurora, and FM.  Fayetteville-Manlius entered the meet with a serious handicap.  Pete Ryan, the teams front runner, and the Top NY Returner from NXN 2014, DNF'd at States two weeks prior, and was not on the line for Regionals.  But Manlius is not one to quit, and they shot out from the gun with ferocity rivaled only by their girls team.  The strength in their teams has always been than anyone can step up at any time, and Bryan Geehrer took that opportunity at 800m.  He surged past the race favorites, and opened up the individual race.  East Aurora stayed calm, Kenny Vasbinder biding his time as well.  Vasbinder would get the edge at the line, and then the team battle was on.  The positions at 4 and 5 were key, and it would come down to every single point.  At the awards, it was announced:  Manlius had gotten the edge by two points.  But the story didn't end there....

Scoring Discrepency Round Two

At NXN-MW, a scoring discrepancy brewed a controversy about who really qualified.  More can be found here, but the short story is all four teams involved got in by way of At-Large.  How does that relate to NXN-NY?  Well, it almost happened again.

The final score was Liverpool 77, Fayetteville-Manlius 107, and East Aurora 109.  There was only one problem.  The team from Watkins Glen had only entered 3 individuals at first, but after a strong performance at Feds, they decided to enter the remaining 4.  Technically, that would make them a full team, but under the scoring at NXN-NY, they were listed as 7 individuals.  When scored as a team, it changes the scoring to Liverpool 77, Fayetteville-Manlius 109, East Aurora 110.  Essentially, it means the entirety of the meet came down to a single 3-second gap.  Had Zink passed Boltman, it would have gone to a tie-breaker, but only if the results weren't amended to include Watkins as a full team.  It would be the second controversial tie-breaker of the year for Aurora, after the Jesuit Tie-Breaker at McQuaid.  However, while the scores would have changed, the finishing order would remain the same.  Just as predicted in the previews, every second counted.
