New York Girls State XC Rankings Week 5

Following Week of Saturday, October 17

For the fifth state rankings week, teams across the state mainly took a breather after consecutive hectic weeks highlighting first the McQuaid and then the Manhattan invitationals. Runners were still involved in more than a dozen meets including some major ones at Burnt Hills, Section 1 Coaches, Alden, Tully, Newark Valley, and out in RI at Brown, along wth some tallied league events such as the CNYCL, Frontier, and CSC.

At none of the meets though was the competition at the level that teams saw at either McQuaid or Manhattan, and that led to a softening of the speed ratings for a number of even the winners at last weekend's meets. Some of the meets were serving at least partly as previews of the course for upcoming state qualifiers. Few teams made any big moves, so the rankings look very similar to last week's, with most of the movement happening in the smaller classes and highlighted by the high up entrance of a Little Red Schoolhouse squad (also known as Elisabeth Irwin HS) into the charts.

One team whose definition of taking a breather was to do some very heavy inhaling and exhaling was Fayetteville-Manlius, which pushed its average TR ratings to close to the 140 mark, which finally even propelled them to the top of the national rankings. Overall the ranking order settled upon by McQuaid and Manhattan results holds sway, changing just a little for teams that had huge jumps in ratings. Biggest movers were Bayport-Blue Point in B, Convent of the Sacred Heart and Chatham in C, and that Little Red Schoolhouse-EI HS team in D.

With so many Class A teams showing their power, it seemed only fair to add 5 more ranking slots for both the girls and boys and push them up to 30. On to the postseason madness of counties, sectional qualifiers, States, Feds, Regionals, and Nationals.

Cheers to all.
