After a long day of rain delays, humid and thick air conditions, and a full schedule of race trials, the girls 3000m took the track. Bella Burda was in search of a personal best, getting herself down to the 9:33 that had since eluded her. The gun went off, and the pack went out. The pack maintained a steady pace, staying together, pulling each other through the opening laps. Halfway through, they had 10 girls all splitting the same time. Burda knew if she wanted to win this race, it was time to take off. She had been outkicked at the qualifier, and had to do everything now, to prevent that again. Burda surged forward,
with many of the pack failing to respond. She grew her lead steadily
lap after lap, until she had pulled away. Uncontested by the 7th lap,
she continued to power away, coming across the line in 9:38.14. In her
post race interview, she mentioned how exciting it was to be able to
race strong again, as well as toeing up against some of the younger
athletes in the state, including 8th grade
Kelsey Chmiel, who had done much of the pace work in the opening laps. The D2 title came down to a sprint, as Caroline Pennachio outleans Julia Flower to take the win at the line. |
