State of the Action

On paper, this looks like a three girl race. In reality, anything can happen.

Bella Burda gave up a slot in that loaded 1500m, despite it coming the day after the 3000m. Wanting to focus all her concentration leads us to believe she is looking for a strong PR here, to capture her first outdoor title. Normally, that would be expected, but when your personal best is 9:33.90. Burda threw down a 9:37.31 at her Sectional Championship, proving she is making all the right moves to get there.

But Section 1 one is a hub for distance running. Anna Flynn has grown up racing Burda. The two matched up at the State Qualifier, and Flynn kicked away in the finishing stretches in both the 3000m and 1500m. This, combined with a strong 800m race at the Eastern State Champions, should give Flynn the confidence to close for the State Title.

And then there is Abbey Wheeler. Picking up the reins from Section 4 reigning champ Jess Lawson, Wheeler is looking to keep the title in Section 4. Wheeler is less than a quarter of a second off Flynn's best, and hasn't had to exert herself in much of her racing. Could Wheeler throw down a big personal best, and upset the Section 1 contingent?

Behind the top three are a slew of those who could come away and grab an upset. Katherine Lee is known to take the pace out hard, and will be expected to do so here. 8th grader Kelsey Chmiel will be battling with Sam Levy in the latest rendition of the Saratoga - Fayetteville-Manlius distance rivalry. In terms of the D2 competition, Julia Flower has a slight edge on the field, but Emily Acker leads a close contingent, and Sophia Tasselmeyer will look for a big performance.
