State of the Action

Wow. This is a field only the State Meet could produce. Some of the best races in recent memory may not be highlighted by the times produced, but the quality of competition involved. There are legitimately 15 girls who could come away with a State Title here. Where to start?

Anna Flynn comes in with the top seed, but only just. She'll have the 3000m under her legs from the night before, and in a kickers race it could make all the difference. Emily MacKay burst onto the scene at the conclusion of Cross Country, and has put in the performances to be a real contender for the title. Lauren Trumble know that all too well, running against MacKay in Section 4. Trumble gave up a good slot in the 800m to go after the 1500m, so we expect some improvements in the works.

There will also be some youth in the field. Sophomore Julia Zachgo threw down a State Leader to take the Eddy Games, and will be running with a much deeper field now. The Ryan girls (no relation) pull into the next slots with their seeds. Kaitlyn Ryan gave up a top three seed in the 800m to go after sub-3:30 in this race, and as the top D2 athlete in the field by almost 6 seconds, will have some extra motivation. Sophie Ryan dropped down from the 3000m after Indoors, and could pull a repeat of XC States where she surprised the field with a big race when it matters most.

And then there is the ultimate wild card. What to make of Sammy Watson? If the field runs afraid, Watson has sub-53 second 400m speed unrivaled by anyone in the field. She has only run the event twice this season, which makes us wonder how much is left untapped? This could be something special given the right race, and who knows what the outcome may be.

There are plenty more names we could talk about, all within striking distance, and may very well come away with the overall win. We'll let the seeds do the talking here.
