2014 Season Overview for Class A
Two facts leap out while filling out the top team and runners lists for 2014 for Class A. The teams for the top 20 entrants are averaging more than 3 points higher than the team that filled the same spot last year, and the top returning runners are on the youngish side with only 7 seniors among the top 20. Two constants are that Fayetteville-Manlius occupies the top spot, but at a 4 point higher level than last year, and that Hilton is in the 20th spot, also about 4 points higher. Those two teams may represent a central idea abour Class A this year: if you want to compete at the top, you will need to really bring something extra in 2014. Whether a stronger challenge in NY will also push FM back on top at Portland remains to be seen, but the season for Class A is shaping up to be very very special.

Last year saw many of the same elements of previous seasons for Class A: FM won the Class A and NXN-NY titles, FM and Saratoga were the top two teams and went to NXN Nationals, Megan Reilly repeated as States champ, and seven of the nine Sectional winners were the same. But there were also differences as Webster Thomas replaced Rush-Henrietta at the top of Section 5 and Valley Central ousted Warwick Valley in Section 9 and no NY Class A team came out on top at the Federation meet or out in Portland.

This year will likely again feature much of the usual news we've grown accustomed to. FM looks to be pretty well loaded and includes a corps of younger runners who will probably make big leaps and once again push the Hornets to the top of the early national rankings. The Section 2 Class A battle will again get nasty as four teams in the state top 15 will be chasing Saratoga for the one slot at States, as Shenedehowa, Colonie, Shaker, and Guilderland all plan their separate uprising against the long reigning Blue Streak power. Sections 4, 5, and 9 also appear set to have exciting top level battles as Elmira squares off against a returning Corning, Webster Thomas faces Rush-Henrietta in Section 5, and Monroe-Woodbury and Warwick Valley tussle in Section 9 with an eye on reigning champ Valley Central.

An extra bit of intrigue with the classification of Corning back to Class A is that a showdown of reigning States champs could occur at Canton if A-champ Megan Reilly and Corning sophomore Jessica Lawson head into the final K together. But Elmira's Abbey Wheeler, FM's Annika Avery, Rush Henrietta's Alex Cooper, and a bunch of other established and rising stars will be looking to come out on top at States and many of the other big invitationals and post season championships of 2014.

No predictions of course, except that the action will be hot and the States meet in Canton will be cold. Really going out on a limb there.
NY-XC-2013-guide
Fayetteville-Manlius's Annika Avery was well on her way to a victory at this point in the NXN-NY race as her team again claimed the regional title.
Section by Section Class A Overview
Section Top Teams Notes
1 Suffern, Arlington, Fox Lane, North Rockland, Mahopac Suffern appears to have enough high level depth behind its top duo to repeat for the S1-A title and do well at States.
2 Saratoga, Shenendehowa, Colonie, Shaker, Guilderland, Bethlehem, Niskayuna The situation in S2-A seems very similar to last year with a loaded Saratoga team holding a decent-sized edge over the rest of the teams.
3 Fayetteville-Manlius, Liverpool, Baldwinsville, Cicero-North Syracuse, West Genesee FM should do well here and the rest of the S3-A will likely remain fairly steady as all the teams lost a key senior except Baldwinsville it appears.
4 Elmira District, Corning, Ithaca, Horseheads Elmira will be trying to hold off the newly returned Corning in S4-A, and this should be a very close match.
5 Webster Thomas, Rush-Henrietta, Hilton, Penfield, Fairport, Webster Schroeder S5-A will likely feature reigning champ Webster Thomas against a rising Rush-Henrietta, but other teams are strongly in the hunt here.
6 Clarence, Lockport, Frontier This race could get tight if Lockport can find the back-of-the-pack depth to challenge Clarence.
7 No representatives
8 Syosset, Massapequa, Calhoun Syosset looks to have too much depth for any serious challenges in S8-A
9 Monroe-Woodbury, Warwick Valley, Valley Central, Pine Bush Monroe-Woodbury appears to have the deep pack to win the S9-A, but Warwick Valley and Valley Central will be trying to fill out their squads for what shapes up to be one of the best sectional contests.
10 No representatives
11 Northport, Sachem East, Sachem North, Ward-Melville, Eastport South Manor, Bay Shore Northport and Sachem East should be the top two contenders for the S11-A title.

This year the Hornets seem to have the pieces well in place to start the season at the top, however anything can happen in between. Annika Avery, Jenna Farrell, and Jessica Howe are all back from States top 10 places, and with the large amount of young talent below them, FM looks to be on a path to challenge for a 9th straight state championship, and maybe even that crazy 8 of national crowns.

The Blue Streaks did well enough with a very young team, but their places at the Federation meet and NXN Nationals was not at their usual level. This year with a squad loaded with veteran freshmen plus long-timer Spencer Hayes, Saratoga looks to be back strongly as the second best team in the state, and if Samantha and Carley Vetter and Peyton Engborg continue to streak upward while in high school, the team could be looking for a long run among the best in the nation..

The Mounties are rated as the 3rd best team in the state and seem to have everything except a deep lineup to make a run for Nationals. The top duo of Kate Zendell and Rachel Ludwikowski medaled at States, and both Ludwikowski and Kamryn McIntosh are still just sophomores, so Suffern has some room to grow if they can fill out the squad more deeply.

This Year's Outlook
2013 and a one year stint down in Class B turned out to be an interesting time for Corning as it captured its first sectional title in 5 years and freshman Jessica Lawson joined the team and blew up all expectations by capturing a States and Federation championship and then running in the Footlocker Nationals meet. Lawson's place is now well-established after a superb track season, but the question of whether Corning can beat out Elmira for the S4-A title remains to be seen.

Amanda Vestri, Claire Ashton, and Ellie Songer are all back to try for a second title, but with the loss of some key seniors, the Titans may need to add more depth and introduce some more fast freshmen to keep the rest of the S5-A teams at bay.

Shannen Kerin 11 37 8th in Grout-2 96
Kaitie Schillaci 12 42 14th in Grout-2 90
This Year's Outlook
The Raiders did well taking 3rd in the always tough S2-A with a very young squad, and they have States runner Bellame Bower back. Kathryn Tenney was the top 7th grader in the state last year, and if she can continue to develop and Colonie can get a strong enough upward movement from the rest of the team, this group could be a serious threat to Saratoga.

This Year's Outlook
Last year Shaker had two seniors on the varsity but it was mainly a very young team with mixed results that resulted in a 5th in the S2-A. But the top four runners should be back and there is a promising group of younger runners at the back of the pack, so if Maryanna Lansing can stay strong and push the Bison along, Shaker could be a big force in S2-A.

Monroe-Woodbury has a young team with a lot of potential led by junior Kathryn Munks who ran at States. With everyone back, if the team can stay healthy and build the customary Crusader pack, it could be the favorite for the S9-A title.

This Year's Outlook
Warwick Valley has had Megan Reilly for the past two years running at the level of the top runners in the state and nation, and this year she will be aiming to pick up a third straight States title, among other things. But for the Wildcats to regain the S9-A crown, there will need to be some steady growth among the rest of the team members, which seems very likely on a young team with the top 5 back for 2014.
