NY/PA Kickstarts Section 4 Season

Difficult conditions in Windsor, but the meet must go on.

It was a day of freezing temperatures, strong winds, and snow.  The rare glimmer of sunshine brought everyone briefly out of their blanket cocoons. While iPhone users lost faith in their weather app, which insisted the temperature was above 40 all day. While it wasn’t ideal for fast times, athletes still braved the conditions and produced exciting races.

Steeple Chase:

1. Ava Pellor(9 ) Elmira District 8:32.64

2. Emily Cortese(12) Susquehanna Valley 8:44.28

3. Ashley Tabuntshikow Vestal 9:02.63

It was a strong race from Ava Pellor. Safest place in steeple is at the front away from the carnage, and that’s where she was the whole race. Elmira has plenty of young talent, and Pellor gets the season started well with a PR in the steeple in very tough conditions.

1. Jack Ladouce(11) Elmira District 10:36.75

4. Adam Bauerle(11) Bainbridge-Guilford-Afton 11:00.76

Not a pleasant day to be jumping in a water pit at 10AM, yet plenty of athletes still toed the line. The boys’ race was led for much of the race by Alex Whittney, but in the end, it was a late surge from Jack Ladouce of Elmira that stuck for the win.

4x100m Relay:

Elmira transitions well from the indoor season and continues to produce strong relays. The winning team included Jessica Thatcher, Kendra Oldroyd, Mackenzie Tubbs, and Abbey Wheeler.

1. Elmira District (A) 8:34.90

2. Vestal (A) 8:38.89

3. Chenango Forks Blue Devils (A) 8:39.27

The boys’ race produced a much closer finish, but in the end it was Elmira who once again came out on top.

100m Dash:

1. Jasmine Howard(12) Binghamton 13.31

3. Abby Picinich(10) Oneonta 13.63

Jasmine Howard was dominant in the 55m throughout the indoor season. She transitioned well to the longer sprint to edge out Mallory Stillman.

1. Mande Semon(12) ITHACA HIGH SCHOOL 11.27

2. Marquis Jackson(11) Susquehanna Valley 11.63

3. Jerry Mcpeak(11) Elmira District 11.67

Mande Semon had control of this race from the gun. His 11.27 split is very close to the state standard, and is currently NY #1.

High Hurdles:

1. Julia Knapp(11) Bainbridge-Guilford-Afton 16.44

2. Morgan Hagenbuch(11) Norwich 17.09

3. Megan Tinklepaugh Vestal 17.37

Knapp had the fastest qualifying time and came through to win the final as well.

1. Dylan Hunt Vestal 15.09

2. Chris Murphy Vestal 15.75

3. Jake Hawley(11) Susquehanna Valley 16.31

Followers of the indoor season will notice two very familiar names once again on top of the results in the hurdles. Dylan Hunt comes away from his performance at states to notch his first win of the outdoor season and .29 off of the state standard.

1500m/1600m:

1. Madeline Beaulieu Vestal 5:03.29

2. Emily MacKay(10) Union-Endicott 5:06.95

3. Mary Rommer(09) Unatego 5:07.55

It was a tight race, but in the end Beaulieu had enough in the tank to pull away from the group.

1. Parrish Bridges(11) Owego Free Academy 4:39.57

2. Lucas Canales(11) ITHACA HIGH SCHOOL 4:42.99

3. Eric Sinton(11) ITHACA HIGH SCHOOL 4:46.17

Lucas Canales led through the beginning of the race, but it was Bridges who managed to take the lead and hold off the duo from Ithaca on the final lap.

3. Dean Howard(10) Sidney 53.18

No surprises here, Murray had no difficulty pulling away from the field and extending his gap to the line in a NY #1 time.

400m Hurdles:

1. Julia Knapp(11) Bainbridge-Guilford-Afton 1:10.21

Vestal came ready for the second hurdle event, with the same two athletes in the Top-3. This time it was the lanky Chris Murphy who took the win.

200m Dash:

1. Jasmine Howard(12) Binghamton 26.92

2. Abby Picinich(10) Oneonta 27.34

3. Monique Avila(11) Binghamton 27.96

Howard crosses the line first for the second time on the day, and her teammate Monique Avila joined her in the Top-3.

1. Mande Semon(12) ITHACA HIGH SCHOOL 23.88

2. Jordan Hackworth(12) ITHACA HIGH SCHOOL 24.38

3. Ricky Houghtelling(11) Elmira District 24.48

Semon came off his strong 100m win with confidence and took his second win of the day ahead of his teammate from Ithaca.

2nd win of the day for Mande Semon

It’s also worth noting that Elmira’s Ricky Houghtelling had a very successful day. His 3rd place in the 200m was his 3rd Top-3 performance on the day. He also finished 2nd in the 400m, and was part of the winning 4x100m relay.

800m:

1. Lauren Trumble(11) ITHACA HIGH SCHOOL 2:20.59

2. Abbey Wheeler(10) Elmira District 2:21.68

3. Missy Emilio(12) Oneonta 2:29.97

This race was decided between two quality XC runners. Wheeler was boxed in at the start, but surged to the front by 200m. She began to create a gap and Trumble was the only one who could follow. They entered the final 100m side by side, and Wheeler led until the final 15m, but in the end Trumble had the stronger kick.

Winning move from Lauren Trumble

1. Matt Murray(12) Norwich 1:59.38

2. James Felice(12) Owego Free Academy 1:59.86

3. Richard Buchanan(11) Susquehanna Valley 2:04.24

With a mix-up at the start, the final heat of the 800m was forced to shiver on the line while it was sorted out. The head timer commented that they probably wouldn’t mind taking DQ’s at that point. There were a lot of hopeful looks from the athletes on the line, but they bravely stood in the wind and snow until the gun went off.

Murray returned to the track in the 800m to post his second NY #1 performance of the day to take a narrow win over James Felice.  Richard Buchanan may have made things more interesting, but he was surprisingly placed into the slower heat. Buchanan paced himself to the finish with an 11 second gap over the closest finisher in his race.

3200m/3000m:

1. Jessica Thatcher(11) Elmira District 10:53.93

2. Khiere Ashley(10) Elmira District 10:56.46

3. Kaylee Stone(9 ) WINDSOR 11:12.14

Elmira’s Thatcher and Ashley worked well together, exchanging lead duties and sharing the wind as they ran ahead of the rest of the field and sprinted it out in the final 100m. Kaylee Stone of host-school Windsor fought to close the gap, butworking alone in the wind she was unable to gain ground and held on to finish 3rd.

1. Richard Buchanan(11) Susquehanna Valley 10:13.83

2. Ned Lauber(12) ITHACA HIGH SCHOOL 10:16.36

3. Ben Cardamone(10) Elmira District 10:18.99

Buchanan was likely a bit frustrated after the 800m, but he came right back and led the race from the gun to take a well deserved win. The win wasn’t uncontested, Ned Lauber and Ben Cardamone both fought on his heels right to the end, but it was Lauber who pulled away from Cardamone in the final 150m to take 2nd place.

3. Owego Free Academy (A) 3:43.21

Horseheads surged to the front of the race on the penultimate leg with a strong run from Sean Strayer. Binghamton had a very swift anchor who blew past Owego and looked to contest 1st place, but Page from Horseheads held onto his lead to bring his team across the line to win the final event on the day.

Ithaca finds it’s way to the top of another jumping event. Airewele wins with a narrow margin over teammate Semon, who apparently wasn’t done after winning the 100m and 200m. They are now ranked NY #4 and NY #5 in the triple jump. Egotanda came back after failing to place in the long jump to grab 3rd in the triple.
