Between 1947 and 1998, only 7 throwers ever got the nod as the Track & Field News High School Boys Athlete Of The Year. In the 15 years since then, no fewer than 8 weightmen have scored, and none have more than the hammer, with 4.
The latest ball-and-chain great is new national recordsetter Rudy Winkler, who claimed new all-time best with both the High School and Junior implements. While admitting he felt “obviously happy” to set a pair of new standards in one day, Winkler reactions also mirror his general approach to throwing.

When we announced the winner of our 2012 High School Girl Athlete Of The Year voting (discus thrower Shelbi Vaughn), we said, “1500 recordsetter Mary Cain became the first New Yorker ever to earn the runner-up honor; she has 2 more years in which to try to attain the top spot.”
With that climb-to-the-top mission easily accomplished after a season of profligate recordsetting (new national standards in the 800, 1500, 3000 and 5000), Cain can now attempt to become the first successful defender since Angela Williams in ’98.
