MileSplit NY - Cornell-bound senior Rudy Winkler (Averill Park) accomplished his career goal in high school yesterday afternoon, breaking a double national record at the West Point Army Strong Hammer Meet. He swung the hammer to a distance of 79.38m, (260-05 feet), which eclipsed the New York State Record, as well as the United States All-Time Record set by Conor McCullough in 2008. The previous mark was 260 feet even.
Winkler also grabbed an unofficial record, the 6 kilogram hammer throw, taking down another record by McCullough from 2008. McCullough's original record of 248-11 was surpassed by Winkler's 249-00.5. Winkler will continue to throw this summer under his high school allegiance, as he has qualified for World's in Moscow, to be held later this summer.
