Kate Murphy of Lake Braddock won the Ocean Breeze Freedom Games 3K in 9:14.02 to set a new national senior class record in the event. Melody Fairchild set the previous class record of 9:17.4 in 1991.
The only prep in U.S. history to clock a faster indoor 3K time is Mary Cain, whose national high school record stands at 9:04.51. Murphy's outdoor PR for 3K is 9:10.51; she is the reigning USATF Junior National champion in the event.
Ninth-grader Katelyn Tuohy of North Rockland High School placed second in 9:42.63, just one second off the New York state freshman record.
