The 58th Annual McDaniel-Baxter Relay Style XC Invite

We hope you are able to join us for what should be a great day of racing at Chenango Valley High School.  This year we will be changing up our format and offering a week day Relay Style race. Our Invite is designed to combine endurance, strategy, and teamwork in a fast-paced and exciting format. Each team is made up of multiple runners who will each complete a designated portion of the course. The total distance of the race is divided among team members with legs varying in distance, so every runner plays an essential role in the teams overall performance.

The Logistics

The race begins with the first leg runners starting together at the line. After completing their portion of the course, they enter a designated exchange zone, where they hand off a baton to the next teammate. This process continues until all team members have completed their legs and the final runner crosses the finish line. Exchanges must take place within the designated zone to ensure fairness and safety.

Team placement is determined by the last leg crossing the finish line equaling the total combined time it takes all runners to complete their legs. Unlike a traditional cross country race focused on individual results, this format emphasizes collaboration, pacing strategy, and smooth transitions. Its not just about speed-its about how well a team works together from start to finish.

Modified teams are composed of 2 same gender athletes and varsity are composed of 3 same gender athletes. If your team's numbers do not divide by the number needed for even teams, you take your additional runner(s) and add them to your slowest seeded team all as the first leg. Whichever of those additional runners reaches the exchange zone first hands off the baton. The other additional runners just become exhibition runners. If you do not have enough athletes for the minimum to create a team please reach out and I can help pair you up with other schools who may be in the same boat to create an exhibition mixed team.
