Drew Hunter, Austin Tamagno get races in while extreme weather conditions in North Carolina force big meet cancellations and send teams scurrying around the country... what's going on?! We have the lowdown
In the first edition of MileSplit Awards, we highlight some of the top performers from around the country this past weekend.
Genesee Valley Park, NY - This may have been the most impressive McQuaid to date. Both Course Records went down, there were more entries than ever, and the reemergence of National Powers are breaking out of Rochester. We were there to capture all the action, and this is one you'll want to relive.
Rochester, NY - The McQuaid Invitational has nearly 8100 entries, and is looking like it will miss the wet weather. That means great competition, great matchups, and potentially great performances are on deck. We hit the Speed Ratings to give our best guess of the outcomes. Check out the projections below.
The train keeps on rolling for Noah Affolder. After relaxed transition to New York running as a sophomore, Affolder has turned into the man to beat in 2015. Expecting Conor Lundy to help push him through the race, the plan changed after Lundy came down with illness after a College Recruiting trip the week prior. With no strings attached, Affolder blasted from the gun, using the pace cart as the sole motivation. Coming through the first mile at 4:42, it was clear he was a man on a mission. Continuing to pound, he came through at 9:30 for the full two-mile, a 9:26 3200m equivalent. On record pace, Affolder pushed further, a huge gap on the field. Coming down the finish stretch, it was a mad sprint towards the finish, with a slight look at the clock, and the announcer counting down, Affolder pointed to the sky, crossing with exuberance. He had crushed the course record by over 10 seconds, putting the question into everyone's mind. Could the 14-minute barrier be broken in Affolder's senior year? It seems to be almost unthinkable, just like sub-12 at Manhattan once was. The Junior who has cruised to two course records, and five weekends undefeated, is removing what impossible really is. Behind him, there were plenty of stories, not excluding his younger brother, who may have set the freshman course record in his own right.
Genesee Valley, NY - While the McQuaid Invitational was generally separated into three races by school size, we wanted to take a look at how it would play out by NYSPHSAA Class. Check out the results below.
We're wrapping up our McQuaid coverage with one last look. We look at the top 20 athletes per grade, to see what the competition may look like for years to come.
We're only a couple days of from what looks like may be a very wet McQuaid Invitational. The largest upstate meet of the year in any season, the McQuaid Invite will host over 8000 athletes. How many will make this list? How many can improve their preexisting standing? Find out live on Saturday.
