Tim Chappell gave Union Springs a substantial lead after the first leg, but little by little the Watkins Glens runners reduced the gap each lap. Evan Degraw took the baton with a lead of just a handful of seconds over Matt Gill. The end would come down to a race between two runenrs who went to indoor states, Degraw (1000m) and Gill (1600). Degraw is known more for his sprinting ability, and suprisingly maintained his lead through the first 1200m. The senior from Watkins Glen has plenty of experience over the 1600m distance, and even though the gap wasn't closing he never panicked. With around 250m to go, he surged ahead of Degraw and quickly opened a gap. Degraw fought to close it down, but Gill proved to be stronger and held his lead to the line. Both athletes had quality splits Gill (4:32) and Degraw (4:38), and the 2nd place time of 19:45.4 is a new school record for Union Springs
