Sectional Showdown: Boys Breakdown
State Qualifiers Spanning Thursday, November 1 to Wednesday, November 7, 2012
News note: Section 11 State Qualifiers now scheduled for Wednesday, November 7 at Sunken Meadows. Section 8 plans under consideration. Section 1 previously moved to Tuesday, November 6 at Bowdoin Park, and Section 9 also moved to Tuesday, November 6 at Bear Mountain. Updated race schedules for Sections 1, 9 and 11 are included at end of article.
Like everything in New York in the wake of the terrible devastation left by Hurricane Sandy earlier this week, the high school running situation in NY and throughout the region has been badly affected. Many communities are without power and water, homes and facilities have been destroyed, transportation has been disrupted and the lives of many people in the state have been turned upside down. Condolences to all who have suffered great losses and who are struggling to recover from the storm, especially those on Long Island and the other coastal area of NY who received the worst of the storm's fury. No area in the region was hit worse than New Jersey where I work when my office isn't under water, and we all send our best wishes to everyone in NJ and to the runners who even after the initial recovery will be wrestling with many difficult questions about their future schedule.
At this point, the main focus is on just the recovery process. Part of that path is the reopening of schools, which in some places may not be for a while. The cross country schedule has been affected, as Sections 1 and 9 have pushed their state qualifier meet back to Tuesday at this point, and Section 11 is going on Wednesday with Section 8 still debating options at this point on Saturday morning. We are starting the coverage now with a delayed preview, which due to the recent storm issues was unavoidable. We also know that the situations for teams may have changed recently and that previews here do not really reflect who will be able to attend the meets or what the conditions of the runners will be. We'll do our best to keep up with breaking news and help clear the path back to the normal state of NY XC running. These NY sectional previews will be released in constantly updated segments with only the first run sections covered in the early releases.
So for what it's worth, here's the kickoff to the previews, with much more to come. Best of luck and cheers to all for whatever does (or doesn't) happen.
Update: Been fighting the power outages down here in Section 1 but all sections are now previewed, though some races were run a few days ago. As to the online HS XC discussions that for some down here lead to calls to follow the actions of the NYC Marathon, if it comes to teams and a section having to bow out in the wake of the storm tragedies and hardships, that is certainly understandable and best wishes for all, but for all the runners not so badly affected and who have worked hard to get to States, the championship will be there for them.

Summary: |
|
Arlington looks good for a third straight S1 title as Sibby Hanson and crew have been near the top of the state rankings all year and Carmel does not quite have the depth yet to make this contest really close, though teams will need to guard against laying back too much to stay strong for States four days later. Likewise Hanson and Carmel's Eric Holt are the frontrunners but also have the States performances to think about for setting priorities. |

After the long layoff, Tappan Zee and Pearl River will wage a battle that could go any way for the S1-B crown. TZ was the clear overall winner of the Rockland County race and is a small favorite. Brian Cook of Pearl River and Nanuet's Luke Gavigan should have a controlled battle at the top. |

Summary: |

It wouldn't be a S3-C contest unless at least 6 ranked teams were involved in the scrum and they all had reasons to think they would win. This year Hannibal is the sitting at the head of the table and hoping to feast on its first title in 40 years, but Adirondack, reigning States champ Holland-Patent and Tully are very close. The individual battle appears to be up for grabs, with Hannibal's Ryan Perry and Solvay's Matt Cregan having the best resumes. |

Summary: |

There are a lot of solid runners in S5-C scatterered among many teams with none of the schools having enough depth to be ranked in the state. Addison and Wayland-Cohocton probably have the most depth of all the teams. Last year's Sates Class D champ Jeff Antolos should win the S5-C title this year. |
