Several New Yorkers Shine at USATF Junior Olympics

James Burns, a junior at Schreiber High School in Port Washington, NY, scorched the competition at the Decathlon event of the 2012 USA Track and Field Junior National Olympics held in Baltimore, MD, earlier this month, scoring 5,042 points to secure the eighth and final medal, awarded to the top eight decathletes in the United States in the intermediate (15-16 year old) boys group.

In her final event of the season, Briana Dana of Congers placed fifth in the long jump at the USA Track and Field National Junior Olympic Championships Saturday in Hughes Stadium at Morgan State University in Baltimore.

The last time Katie Lembo finished her personal outdoor track and field season as a national champion, she went on to earn first team all-state honors after the 2011 cross country season.

Lembo, who will be a junior at Penfield beginning this fall, could do it again. 

While Lembo missed a personal-best, her race in 10 mintues, 11.84 seconds was fast enough to win the National Junior Olympic intermediate girls 3,000-meter race last weekend in Baltimore. Lembo’s winning margin was 18.24 seconds.

Sidgie Greene (Metropolis Track Club) had a noteworthy performance in the Young Men 2,000m steeplechase. In the afternoon heat, Greene instantly ran to the front of the pack running a winning time of 6:13.77.
