BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Cornell rising sophomore Stephen Mozia claimed the Junior National Championship in the shot put Saturday, leading from the first throw and never looking back to finish well ahead of the field.

With a throw of 66' 3 1/4”, Mozia was a mere 14 centimeters shy of the meet record but nearly a full meter better than the second-place finisher. The win, besides awarding him the Junior National Championship, also qualified him for the IAAF Junior World Championships in Barcelona in July. Mozia will be seeded fourth in the world going into that meet.

Several other Big Red athletes took part in the Outdoor US Junior National meet over the weekend, including rising sophomore Nick Athanasopolous. Competing against the best age-19-and-younger athletes in the country, Athanasopolous took on the decathlon. Through five events on Friday, he was in the top half of the 28-athlete field. He moved up to 10th place by the end of all 10 events, including a second-place finish in the 1500.

Rising sophomore Rutger Admirand competed as well, taking part in the preliminary round of 800-meter dash with the sixth-fastest time of the day and finishing in 1:51.86. Advancing to Saturday's final under brutal heat conditions, Admirand placed seventh in 1:57.12.

Sunday saw two more Cornell athletes vie for junior national championships as Jesse Braun and Mozia took part in the discus. Mozia, competing out of the third flight, wound up finishing in third with a hurl of 197' 6”. That mark is good enough to place him as the alternate for the World Championship if the first or second place finisher does not compete. Braun fouled all three of his attempts.

The track and field week is just heating up for Cornell, as the US Olympic Trials will begin in Eugene, Ore., later in the week. Morgan Uceny '07 will attempt to make the Olympics in the 1500, as she was the No. 1-ranked 1500 runner in the world in 2011. Other Cornellians entered in the Olympic Trials with provisional marks include Max King '02 (3K steeplechase),  Nick Huber '12 (decathlon) and current Cornellians Katie Kellner (10K) and Montez Blair (high jump).
