Statement: Nick Ryan (Fayetteville-Manlius) knew he had to race differently than the slower pace of his 3200m.  Zavon Watkins could outkick him if Ryan did not tire him out, as Watkins has several 49 second quarters under his belt.  Ryan pushed the pace fast and early, to pull Watkins away from the crowd.  Nick Ryan, with 300 meters to go, quickly responded to Watkins' signiature surges, something not many people have been able to accomplish this year.  In the end, it was a wire to wire race down the backstretch, where Ryan's endurance paid off for him to hit a new New York State Meet record of 4:05.24.  That is also US #2, before the addition of the Dream Mile race that occurred five hours later.

Statement: The top seeds for the race went in looking for an 8:50 performance.  However, after the split was right around 4:40, everyone knew it was becoming more out of reach.  Nick Ryan turned on the afterburners to cruise a finishing mile of 4:26 to win, pulling two Division 2 athletes to the line with him.  An impressive double for the junior.
