Meet Info |
The New York State Outdoor Championships return to Cicero-North Syracuse High School for the fourth time in nine years after previous highly successful turns in 2004, 2005 and 2009. Events kick off on Friday, June 8 shortly after noontime, with all times being a bit approximate. Athletes from the NYSPHSAA public schools, CHSAA NYC-area Catholic schools, PSAL NYC-area public schools, and the NYSAIS NYC-area private schools will be meeting to see who can run and jump and throw the fastest and furthest.
At States, both the boys and girls have a total of 19 events to vie in, with 16 being individual competitions and three featuring relay squads. The action is further broken down between the Division 1 championships for the big schools (600 seed size and up) and Division 2 championships for smaller schools. In some events like long-distance races, 4x800m relay, pentathlon, high jump and pole vault, the D1 and D2 athletes compete together to decide the division crowns and the overall federation titles. In the rest of the events, the D1 and D2 athletes compete separately for division championships, and then the top 8 performers are selected to compete for the overall title, most of which are decided on Saturday. So yeah, you can potentially finish 7th in the D1 action and go on to win the overall State championship.
2012 has been another banner year for NY athletes in the girls events. At the national level, Mary Cain of Bronxville leads the nation in the 800m, 1500m, 3000m, and the mile: she will be trying to win the 1500m at States eight days after again shaving time off her NY record at Section 1 Qualifiers. The shorter three races -- 100m, 200m, 400m -- are all led in NY by Medgar Evers' Kadecia Baird, who is at #3 in the US in the 400m and #11 at the 200m. She bravely qualified in all three events for States but will be sensibly trying for just a double. North Shore's Brianna Nerud is this year's LI girl hanging a fast five and running at the top position in the national 2000m steeplechase rankings. And as noted in the coverage below, there are dozens of NY girls ranked in the top 10 to 20 in their events at the national level. States should see some epic runs and terrific action from the crack of the first gun for the girls pentathlon 100m hurdles races on Friday around noon through to the 4x400m relay race on Saturday somewhere around 4:00. |

2011 Synopsis |
Last year was a continuous feed of highlights for the girls at States as Cornwall's Aisling Cuffe started the fireworks on Friday night with a NY record in the 3000m, and then on Saturday Bronxville's Mary Cain lowered her own NY record in the 1500m and pulled Cuffe and Fayetteville-Manlius's Courtney Chapman under the old record as well. Popping off the excitement in other events was Ward Melville's Mary Kate Anselmini's narrow miss at breaking her own national record in the 2000m steeplechase and Fayetteville-Manlius's 4x800m squad's posting of the 2nd-best US time in 2012 as of meet time led by Chapman, Katie Brislin, Katie Sischo, and Heather Martin. The Medgar Evers 4x400m team of Kadecia Baird, Shakele Seaton, Sandrae Farquharson, and Nyanka Joseph ran 2nd to Garden City in the D1 championship but set a meet record while winning the federation championship. And if you guessed the winning time for the high hurdles at 14.26 last year, you would have hit the mark for both the boys and girls champs, as Williamsville South's Kailyn Arcury and Amityville's Sancho Barrett both registered the same time, though Barrett had to go 10 meters further.
There was a lot of other great action last year, and this year Cain has shaved some more time off her 1500m State record and the old NY 800m record while North Shore's Brianna Nerud was clipping a few seconds off Anselmini's old steeplechase mark. Could be some more thrills brewing up for 2012. |

Top 12 Questions for 2012 States |
All of the athletes going to States are sure that their own particular events are the most important focal points of action during the meet, and though these beliefs are true, there are some classically epic battles at States that deserve special attention. Here is a top 12 list of the showdowns that are not to be missed.
All are smoking, and at least one will have a national spotlight focused on it.
Note that due to injuries, scheduling issues, and the fact that a number of athletes are wisely focusing on one or two events rather than overdoing it, some of the anticipated titanic matches are not going to happen. We will just have to settle for just unbelievably great action instead.
12-- Thill thrill in pole vault? Junior Jen Thill of Lancaster is the only girl to soar to 12 feet this year, but vaulting right behind her is last year's States runner-up, Alexis Bartholomew of Binghamton. The bar will be raised.
11-- Will leaping wizards go to outer limits? The girl from the easternmost point of NY is setting the direction for girls at States. Riverhead's Melodee Riley is reigning champ in the triple jump and also placed in the long jump. Riley leads this year in the TJ again, and Brittany Bryant of Cornwall and Janel Francis of Copiague are stretching things out in the LJ. We'll see what lengths these jumpers will go to to win a title.
10-- Who can really fling it? Jordan Collins of Bayport-Blue Point and Caysie Capano of Troy have both thrown the discus over 130 feet this year, and right behind them is the only finalist from last year's States, whose top 7 finishers were seniors. Starpoint's Bernice Dumbleton is now hoping to graduate at the top.
9-- Who's got the best shot? Batavia's Erica Williams was 8th in the shot put last year at States and this year has put herself at the top of the rankings. But Longwood's Adora Nwolili and New Rochelle's Briyah Brown are not far behind, and 2011 4th-place States finisher Adrienne Alexander of Bishop Loughlin is also looking to send a message.
8-- Who will replace Kailyn Arcury as the heroine of the high hurdles? Last year Williamsville South's Kailyn Arcury rose up from back-of-the-pack rankings to win the 100m hurdles. With two indoor States hurdles titles also in her pocket, Arcury has elected to pass on States for her own senior year-end fun stuff. Cardozo's Akayla Anderson, Uniondale's Brittney Webley, and Mount Vernon's Lexus Harney are three of the favorites in a crowded field.
7-- Who's going highest? Kaitlin Whitehorn of John Glenn was an inch better in the high jump last year at States, and she has doubled that margin in the rankings this year. She's the senior with experience, but she has a bunch of young pogo sticks behind her vying for the title, including last year's 10th place finisher Jackie Crundon of Walt Whitman.
6-- What's brewing in the 800m and 3000m? Mamaroneck's Anima Banks and Cardozo's Alexis Panisse both won indoor titles at States, but neither will be will be trying to win an individual crown at CNS. Panisse will instead be running in the Adidas Dream Mile on Saturday in NYC, and Banks is unable to compete in the 800m as well as the 4x800m. That still leaves open one of the classic battles as 2010 1000m indoor champ Kelsey Margey the senior from Friends Academy takes on Garden City freshman Emma Gallagher for the 800m crown. In the 3000m, Valley Central's Holly Cavalluzzo finds herself the top seed in a pack that includes a group of sub-10:00 runners that includes 2010 Class AA XC champ Christie Rutledge of Fayetteville-Manlius.
5-- Can someone from North Shore make a big splash at States? North Shore's Vikings team has recently suffered some setbacks with the loss of star Samatha Nadel and the seemingly early demise of its top-ranked 4x800m relay team, though it is still top seeded at States. But having the national record holder in the 2000m steeplechase on the team is always good for a smile. Will Brianna Nerud go below 6:30 at States and get the Nationals title a week later? Seems likely.
4-- Which relay will have the biggest fireworks? In the 4x100m, last year's States runner-up Medgar Evers is matched against Mount Vernon. The 4x400m has States champion Garden City chasing Colonie. The 4x800m could see 2011 champ Fayetteville-Manlius trying to fight off a trio of Section 2 rivals including Saratoga, Shenendehowa, and Holy Names. Burn baby burn.
3-- Will there be one or two final Planter's punches in the 400m races at States? Colonie's Kyle Plante has won three States indoor championships in the 300m and she has an outdoor D1 400m hurdles' crown. The senior has never won a federation title outdoors, but she will will be heavily favored in the 400m sprint, and then she will look to top off her HS career by leading Colonie to the 4x400m title.
2-- Who will be the Queen of Speed at CNS? The race to be the top sprinter in NY might appear to belong to Medgar Evers' Kadecia Baird, who is top-ranked in the NY Milesplit rankings at the three speed distances and will be looking to win titles in the 100m and 200m. Elmont's two-time 100m States champ Valencia Hannon is determined to prove that she rules again. Taft's Kimberly Bailey looks to challenge Baird in the 200m, and with a pack of other fast girls all trying to be the top sprint demons, the speed queen title could have a lot of claimants.
1-- Will a certain NY girl shatter the national 1500m record at States? Three years ago as a half-shod Bronco tyke, Bronxville's Mary Cain introduced herself at States by taking 3rd in the unseeded heat of the 3000m and finishing 15th overall. Last year as a freshman, she ran half that distance with twice the footwear and set a state record in the 1500m. A few days ago Cain ran the #3 all-time national best mark in the 1500m in far from ideal conditions to break the NY record yet again. Now with the Olympic US team trials provisional time requirement squared away, she can focus on playing a sophomore's prank on Jordan Hasay and romping away with her 4:14.20 US scholastic record that the CA girl set four years ago. Cain will have a number of chances to get the record this June (and maybe with luck on July 1 in Eugene), but make sure to have the video cameras ready around 11:30 at CNS on Saturday. Still, the big question is not whether Cain will set any records at States. What we really want to know is, did she ever find that lost shoe on the CNS track back in 2009?

Girls Events |
The standings below for each of the 19 events contested at States lists the top 6 overall competitors and then provides the top 10 competitors for the Division 1 and Division 2 contests. The States results generally hew close to the listed projections. In 2011, the #1 seed among all of the D1 and D2 athletes did win 13 of the 19 federation championships, and all but one of the events was taken by one of the top three seeds. The one dark horse winner last year was Williamsville South's Kailyn Arcury, who won the 100m hurdles as the 10th overall seed. Arcury was the 2011 55m hurdle indoor state champion, however, so she had the winner's pedigree going into last June's action, and with her 2012 indoor title she now has won three States hurdles crowns in a row.
But between the federation, Division 1 and Division 2 titles to hand out, there are a lot of great contests to follow. And in each one of them, when the sweat has dried and the dust has settled, there will be one athlete or team left standing on the winner's podium. |

|
Statement: Kadecia Baird is the top ranked runner in the 200m. Second-ranked Kyle Plante is eschewing the event to concentrate on the 400m, and the third-ranked runner is last year's champion Tanaya Yarde, who is focusing on the 400m hurdles instead. This event looks like it should be falling to Baird, though Taft's Kimberly Bailey should give her a strong challenge.. |

1500m
|
|
Event Info: 2011 Winner: Mary Cain (Bronxville) 4:17.84, State Record: 4:16.52, Meet Record: 4:17.84, State Qualifier Mark (FAT): 4:36.04 (D1) - 4:47.04 (D2) |
|
Statement: Mary Cain created a lot of fanfare last year when she set a state and national freshman record in the 1500m at States. This year the attention of the national sports media will be even more focused on her race as she powers ever closer to the national scholastic record of 4:14.20. Cain will enter Saturday's race with a personal best mark more than 12 seconds ahead of the runner next to her on the line, so unlike last year's riveting duel between Cain and Aisling Cuffe, this time the winner will be running almost by herself. |
