JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Two members of the Manhattan College men's outdoor track & field team-Albert Johnson III (Painted Post, N.Y.) and Roman Ewald (Olching, Germany) were in action on Thursday on the first day of the NCAA East Preliminary Round. Johnson just missed advancing to the NCAA Championships in the long jump, while Ewald contested the discus throw at the University of North Florida's Hodges Stadium.
Johnson claimed the 16th and final place in the long jump finals with a leap of 7.46 meters (24 feet, 5¾ inches) on his third attempt. He entered the finals trailing LSU's Kyron Blasie by 11 centimeters for 12th place and a ticket to his first NCAA Championships. However, Johnson didn't improve over his final three attempts and finished 16th.
Ewald made his second appearance at the NCAA East Preliminary in the discus. Seeded 43rd out of the 48 competitors, Ewald had an impressive showing. His best effort was 50.62 m (166'1), which was good for 32nd place.
The Jaspers have one more entry in the competition. Anastas Papazov (Balchik, Bulgaria) will be in action in the men's hammer throw at 10 a.m. on Friday. Papazov is the No. 6 seed in the event.
