Day One Recap
PRINCETON, N.J. - Manhattan College has had at least one athlete win an event at the IC4A Championships every year since 1970. That streak reached 43 consecutive years at Princeton University's Weaver Stadium on Saturday, as Felix Siljeback-Larsen (Vasteras, Sweden) earned his first IC4A title in the decathlon.
The leader after day one, Siljeback-Larsen dropped into second place after the 110 meter hurdles. However, with a personal-best effort of 33.92 meters (111 feet, three inches) in the discus, he moved back into the lead for good. Siljeback-Larsen increased his margin by clearing 4.60 m (15'1), 40 centimeters higher than the rest of the field, in the pole vault. He then threw the javelin 45.92 m (150'8) and concluded the competition by running the 1500 meters in a personal-best time of 4:50.56. Siljeback-Larsen's final total of 6874 points was just short of his personal-best and nearly 200 points better than the second-place finisher, VMI's Antonio Wood.
Siljeback-Larsen's victory gave Manhattan 10 points in the team competition, and the Jaspers picked up 12 more in the hammer throw. Anastas Papazov (Balchik, Bulgaria) placed second with a mark of 65.75 m (215'8), while Roman Ewald (Olching, Germany) scored at the IC4A Championships for the first time in his career, finishing fifth with a 57.41 m (188'4)-effort. Ewald also took ninth in the discus (49.75 m, 163'3) on Saturday.
In the pole vault, Brian McGovern (Yonkers, N.Y.) cleared 4.93 m (16'2), but ended up 10th on misses. Albert Johnson III (Painted Post, N.Y.) added a 10th-place showing of his own in the long jump (7.31 m, 23'11¾). In addition, Kevin D'Emic (Rockaway Point, N.Y.) just missed qualifying for the final in the 800 meters. D'Emic finished second in his heat by 0.01 seconds, and his time of 1:51.18 was the 10th-best overall.
After two days of competition, Manhattan sits tied for fourth in the team standings with 22 points, eight behind first-place Connecticut. The Jaspers have a chance to add to their total on Sunday, when the shot put, high jump, triple jump and javelin are contested.
