Track Teams Look for More Success at Eastern Championships

5/10/2012 11:40:00 AM

ECAC/IC4A Schedule

ITHACA, N.Y. – Championship season is in full swing for the Big Red track and field teams, and both squads will head to Princeton this weekend for the ECAC and IC4A Championships.

The women, fresh off their ninth Outdoor Heptagonal Championship in 11 years, and the men, who placed second at the Outdoor Heps last weekend to Princeton, will be looking to impress at the Outdoor Eastern Championships.

With both teams on a hot streak, it could be an opportunity for more magic like Cornell experience indoors in March.

At the Indoor ECACs and IC4As, both Big Red teams came away victorious. The Cornell women became the first ever Ivy League team to win an eastern title while the men claimed a win for the first time since 2007.

The IC4As is the longest-running athletic event in the United States, dating all the way back to 1876. Predating the NCAA, the IC4As were used as the national championship until World War II.

Teams from the 85 east coast schools from North Carolina to Maine will be competing at IC4As and ECACs, and this weekend marks the final opportunity for athletes to qualify for next weekend's NCAA First Round in Jacksonville, Fla.

The Big Red men and women placed fourth in 2011's Outdoor Eastern Championships. In the last decade, the Cornell teams have done as well as second place, but neither team has won in that span.

Competition will begin Friday with the ECAC Heptathlon at noon and the IC4A decathlon at 1 p.m. The day closes with the IC4A 10K at 9:15 p.m. Saturday's action starts at 9 a.m. with more decathlon and heptathlon events, while the track trials open at 10:30 a.m. Sunday's final day starts at 10 a.m. with the ECAC shot put, and the day comes to its conclusion with the 4x400 relays at 3 p.m.
