Track Teams Clean Up at Big Red Invite

ITHACA, N.Y. – Welcoming 13 schools and six club teams, the Big Red accounted for 16 event wins and 16 IC4A/ECAC qualifiers between the men and the women when they hosted their final home meet of the year with the Big Red Invitational at the Kane Sports Complex on Sunday.

The Cornell men had a very good day with five event wins and seven IC4A qualifying efforts. Once again, there were terrific efforts in the long jump as four Cornellians were over 23 feet. Sophomore Hercules Stancil was second at 23' 11 1/2”, senior Chase Aaronson was third at 23' 10 1/4” and freshman Han Wei Chew was fourth at 23' 4” as all three bettered the Eastern standard. Freshman Nick Athanasopolous was fifth at 23' 1 3/4”.

Sophomore David Kim won the pole vault in an IC4A-qualifying 15' 9”, and classmate Tommy Butler took the high jump, also hitting the IC4A standard with a clearance of 6' 10 1/4”.

Freshman Jesse Braun had a terrific day in the throws, winning the shot put at 52' 2” and the discus at 166' 5”, both IC4A qualifiers. Also doing well in the field was junior Mike Murphy in the shot put (third, 47' 11”), freshman Mike Rabbitt (fourth, 149' 6”) in the javelin, and Chew (second, 46' 5 1/4”) and Athanasopolous (third, 45' 10”) in the triple jump.

Freshman David Melly led a 1-2-3 Cornell sweep in the 3K steeple, running 9:19.33 while classmate Kieran Kinnare was second in 9:24.17 and junior Andy Arnold was third in 9:24.40. Sophomore Justin McCollin had a good day, placing fourth in the 100 (11.09) and 200 (22.18) while the duo of junior Andre Anderson (third, 55.30) and senior Steve Wexler (sixth, 56.74) ran well in the 400 hurdles.

The Cornell women also did very well, compiling 11 event wins and nine ECAC qualifiers with some very strong performances in the field and on the track.

One of the big highlights of the day came in the high jump as junior Ailish Hanly set a facility record and moved to No. 2 all-time at Cornell with a first-place clearance of 5' 8 3/4” in the high jump.

In the pole vault, freshman Lindsey Enders moved to No. 3 all-time with a clearance of 12' 5 1/2”, also an ECAC qualifier. Juniors Lindsey Patterson and Claire Dishong were over 11' 7 3/4” to tie for fifth.

Senior Kristin Brandt equaled her lifetime personal record in winning the triple jump at 40' 2”, No. 6 all-time at Cornell, while junior Savannah Johnson was second at 38' 9 1/2” for another good effort.

Sophomore Anjelique Parnell won the long jump at 18' 8”, while classmate Dominique Corley was fourth at 18' 1/2” after earlier tying sophomore Jennifer Bush for fourth in the high jump at 5' 3”.

Senior Erin Rossi led the way for the women's throwers with a first-place heave of 170' 11” in the hammer, yet again an ECAC qualifier for Rossi this season. Freshman Felicia Reid won the javelin at 134' 10”, and classmate Megan Deford was second in the shot put (41' 2 1/2”) and third in the discus (132' 1”).

There were several standout efforts on the track as well. Cornell won the first final of the day as the 4x100 of Parnell, freshman Zena Kolliesuah, sophomore Ebolutalese Airewele and freshman Katie Woodford bettered the ECAC standard with a time of 46.97 despite no competition.

The hurdles were also a highlight. Senior Taylor Baird twice dipped under the ECAC standard, running 14.25 in the prelims of the 100 hurdles before finishing fourth in the final in 14.19 while freshman Mina Amick-Alexis ran a personal record of 14.34 to hit the ECAC standard and tie for No. 9 all-time at Cornell.

In the 400 hurdles, sophomore Ryan Woolley won convincingly in 1:01.03 to best the ECAC qualifying mark, and junior Mari Giurastante was second in 1:03.44. Cornell also placed 1-2 in the distance hurdle race as freshman Corey Dowe placed first in a personal-record time of 11:00.06 in the 3K steeple and junior Suzana Markolovic ran a good race to get second in 11:14.58.

Cornell also swept the 3K and 5K as junior Cara Costich ran 10:15.22, and classmate Kate Rosettie won the 5K in 17:20.98 while sophomore Liz Simpson (17:28.94) and senior Shelby Herman (17:33.63) were second and third.

Also running well was freshman Jasmine Smith in the 200 (25.36) and freshman Katie Woodford (third, 12.13) and senior Melissa Hewitt (fourth, 12.15) in the 100 and freshman Syd Williams in the 3K (second, 10:43.03).

Next up for the Big Red is the Outdoor Heps, which will be at Franklin Field on May 5-6.
