Men's Track Qualifies 10 for IC4As, Wins Heps 4x400 at Penn Relays

ITHACA, N.Y. – The Cornell men's track and field team competed at the 118th running of the historic Penn Relays in Philadelphia this week and came back with a treasured Penn Relays wheel in taking the Heps section of the 4x400 and a remarkable second-place finish in the Championship section of the high jump from sophomore Montez Blair. Overall, the Big Red had 10 IC4A qualifiers, four changes to the all-time top 10 lists and a new school record.

Thursday proved to be a very successful first day as things went well for the men's distance runners. Sophomore Max Groves continued his breakout year with a 13th-place run of 14:13.75 in the Championship 5000, which places him seventh all-time at Cornell.

In the Championship 10K, juniors Matt McCullough (seventh, 30:06.58) and Kevin Johnson (15th, 30:33.57) ran very well to easily better the IC4A standard. Also competing was freshman Ben Potts (16th in the college 5K, 14:45.79), senior Chandler Kemp (10th in the college section, 9:25.84) and junior Andy Arnold in the 3K steeple.

The clear individual highlight came on the final day in front of nearly 50,000 spectators: Blair was fantastic on Saturday in placing second in the Championship of America high jump, setting a new school record and tying the fifth-best performance ever in Ivy League history with a clearance of 7' 3 1/4”, one of the top 10 jumps in the NCAA this year and an Olympic Trials "B" standard qualifier.

There were other good high jumps on Friday as senior Chris Arlihganus was fourth in the Eastern high jump with an IC4A qualifier of 6' 9 3/4”. Sophomore Tommy Butler was seventh at 6' 6 3/4”.

The highlight in the throws came from sophomore Stephen Mozia and freshman Jesse Braun. Mozia was eighth in the Championship section of the shot put, reaching 57' 4 1/4”, an IC4A qualifier, while Braun was third in the college discus, reaching 167' 5”, an IC4A qualifier and No. 10 all-time at Cornell.

In the vault, sophomore Peter Roach was fourth in the college section, clearing the IC4A-qualfifying height of 15' 9”. Classmate David Kim was fourth in the Eastern vault at 14' 9”.

The men's 4x400 had a very good two days. Beginning with Friday, the quartet of senior Dan Thomas (48.2), senior Brian Freitas (48.6), freshman Rutger Admirand (48.6) and senior Ken McClain (48.4) ran 3:14.62 to win the Heps race and a treasured Penn Relays wheel. The team came back on Saturday afternoon to place sixth in the IC4A race, as Thomas (47.9), freshman Cisco Olloqui (48.5), Freitas (48.8) and McClain (47.8) ran 3:13.55.

Also on Saturday, the Big Red fielded a very competitive 4x800 team. After winning the indoor IC4A title in the event, and boasting a lineup with three 1:49 800 runners, the team entered the race with high hopes. The lineup of sophomore Eric Bice (1:52.7), junior Nick Wade (1:50.8), sophomore Will Weinlandt (1:51.3) and Admirand (1:52.4) ran 7:26.38 to place sixth in the Championship of America in the seventh-best time in school history.

Cornell had two other relays on Friday, the 4x100 and distance medley relay. The 4x100 of sophomore Chris Bain, junior Jedidiah Adarquah-Yiadom, senior Chase Aaronson and sophomore Kinsley Ojukwu ran 42.64 for 50th. The distance medley relay placed sixth in the college section behind legs from junior Will McFall (1200, 3:01.8), senior Tom Randall (400, 50.4), senior Chris Jakobson (800, 1:58.2) and freshman Ben Potts (1600, 4:15.7) ran 10:06.31.

The Cornell men also had many other individual competitors. Senior co-captain Dan Hagberg was 21st in the 110 hurdles, running 14.42, and junior Andre Anderson was 38th in the 400 hurdles at 55.15.

Other competitors included Mozia (17th, 155' 4”) and senior co-captain Bob Belden (23rd, 153' 1”) in the college discus, sophomore Stephen Bell (13th, 22' 1 1/2”), Aaronson (22nd, 21' 6”) and freshman Han Wei Chew (23rd, 21' 5 1/4”) in the Eastern long jump and sophomore Dan Scott (eighth, 46' 4”) and Bell (15th, 45' 9”) in the Eastern triple jump.

On Sunday, Cornell will host the 13-team Big Red Invitational at the Kane Sports Complex.
