Big Red Track to Host Binghamton, Birmingham in Friday Tri-Meet

4/19/2012 10:58:00 AM

ITHACA, N.Y. – The Cornell track and field teams will be staying home this weekend, hosting the Binghamton University and the United Kingdom's Birmingham University in a tri-meet at the Robert J. Kane Sports Complex on Friday.

The meet was originally scheduled to be the Upstate Challenge and held in Buffalo, but it was moved to Cornell's campus earlier in the week and Buffalo pulled out.

Cornell is the last stop in Birmingham's quadrennial United States tour, as the team has already been to Harvard, Yale and Penn this year. Birmingham returns the favor by hosting the Big Red every four years on its trip to England, which will take place next in 2014.

Cornell has had a consistent relationship with Birmingham since the 1960s, and this unique arrangement was begun by Harvard and Yale in the 1890s with Oxford and Cambridge.

Field events on Friday will begin at 2 p.m. with the shot put, hammer throw, long jump, high jump and pole vault. The track events get started at 3 p.m. with the 3000 steeplechase. The meet concludes at 6:35 with the 4x400 relays.

While the tri-meet is in progress, several Big Red athletes will be traveling to Princeton for multiple events at the Princeton invite. Molly Glantz and Jade Williams will be running in the 800 on the women's side, while Rutger Admirand, Nick Wade and Eric Bice will do the same on the men's side.

Four Big Red women will also run in the 1500: Janel Parker, Marianne Collard, Emily Shearer and Dale Kinney. They will be joined by Ben Potts and Will McFall competing in the 1500 on the men's side.

Rounding out the Big Red contingent at Princeton will be Brett Kelly, Kevin Johnson, Matt McCullough and Gabe Heck testing their endurance in the 5000.
