Men's Track Claims Six Event Wins at Bucknell Bison Outdoor Classic

ITHACA, N.Y. – In an impressive display of individual excellence and team depth, the Cornell men's track team had a very good weekend at the Bucknell Bison Outdoor Classic on Saturday and Sunday in Lewisburg, Pa.

Competing against dozens of teams from the Mid-Atlantic region and beyond, the Big Red had six event wins, 19 IC4A qualifiers and seven changes to the school all-time top 10 lists. Event wins came from senior Ken McClain in the 400 hurdles, senior co-captain Dan Hagberg in the 110 hurdles, sophomore Montez Blair in the high jump, sophomore Peter Roach in the pole vault and the 4x100 and 4x400 relays.

The meet got off to a strong start on Saturday evening in the discus as freshman Stephen Mozia and senior co-captain Bob Belden continued to shine. Mozia placed third in the discus on Saturday at 171' 10” (No. 5 all-time) and was fourth in an outstanding 61' 3” (No. 2 all-time) in the shot put on Sunday. Meanwhile, Belden was fourth in the discus at 170' 10” (No. 7 all-time) and had an IC4A qualifier of 55' 2” for eighth in the shot put.

The Big Red had very good efforts in the 1500 to get the ball rolling on the track on Saturday evening. Junior Will McFall continued his breakout year with a fourth-place finish in 3:48.29, and classmate Andy Arnold was sixth in 3:48.93, both IC4A qualifiers. Freshman Ben Potts won his heat in 3:51.32, and junior Nick Wade was in the top 15 with a run of 3:51.36.

The Cornell men had some fine efforts in the longer distance races as well. Sophomore Max Groves continued his great running with a sixth-place effort of 29:54.21 in the 10K, only seven seconds removed from a spot in the school top 10 lists. Senior Chandler Kemp had a big personal record to place 10th in 30:33.42, joining Groves as an IC4A qualifier.

There were good steeplechase efforts as well as freshman David Melly (eighth, 9:19.52) and sophomore Chris Christoff (11th, 9:20.29) both set personal bests.

The Cornell men continued to roll on the track in day two of the meet on Sunday. In the 4x100, the quartet of sophomore Chris Bain, junior Jedidiah Adarquah-Yiadom, senior Chase Aaronson and sophomore Kinsley Ojukwu placed first in 40.77, No. 7 all-time.

Next up in the 800, the Cornell men had a great showing as freshman Rutger Admirand (third, 1:49.60, No. 6 all-time) and sophomore Will Weinlandt (fourth, 1:59.76, No. 9 all-time) ran very well, as did sophomore Eric Bice, who set a personal record to place seventh in 1:51.69, as all three were under the IC4A standard.

The hurdles were a good event area as Cornell won both the high and low hurdles, with senior co-captain Dan Hagberg winning the 110s with a time of 14.44 (an IC4A qualifier). Freshman Nick Athanasopolous was fifth in 15.36. The senior tandem of Ken McClain (52.21) and Brian Freitas (52.96) went 1-2 in the 400 hurdles, easily getting under the IC4A standard.

The sprinting events were also very competitive. Adarquah-Yiadom was fourth in the 100 in an IC4A-qualifying 10.79 and eighth in the 200 at 21.90, while Aaronson was seventh in 10.91 in the 100. In the 400, Ojukwu made an impressive debut with an IC4A-qualfiying 48.37 to place third. Senior Dan Thomas was seventh in 49.16, and freshman Cisco Olloqui was 11th in 49.50.

The Big Red won both the pole vault and high jump. Sophomore Peter Roach was over 16' 2 3/4”, No. 7 all-time at Cornell, to also place first. Freshman Keith Rayburn was over 14' 9” for firth and sophomore David Kim cleared 14' 3 1/4” for ninth. And sophomore Montez Blair continued his winning ways in the high jump, clearing 6' 10 1/4” for first. Joining him as IC4A qualifiers were senior Chris Arlinghaus and sophomore Tommy Butler, who tied for second at 6' 8 1/4”.

Cornell closed out the meet with a win in the 4x400 as Thomas (48.9), Olloqui (48.5), Freitas (47.9) and McClain (47.3) ran 3:13.32 for the win.

Next up will is the Upstate Challenge, this year to be hosted by the University of Buffalo on Saturday. After that, the Big Red will head to Philadelphia for the Penn Relays from April 26-28, will host the Big Red Invite on April 29 and then will return to Philadelphia for the Outdoor Heps on May 5-6.
