MAHWAH, N.J. - Twelve members of the Manhattan College outdoor track & field team notched first-place finishes and five qualified for the ECAC/IC4A Championships at Ramapo College's Roadrunner Invitational on Saturday. The meet was also Manhattan's first team-scored competition of the season. The Jasper men grabbed first place in the team standings, while the Manhattan women were second.
On the men's side, the Jaspers were led by Roman Ewald (Olching, Germany). Ewald won the shot put competition, qualifying for the IC4A Championships with a mark of 16.56 meters (54 feet, four inches), then took second in the discus throw (49.89 m, 163'8). Rokas Kirlys (Kamaji, Lithuania) placed just behind Ewald in both events. His best effort in the shot put was 15.89 m (52'1¾), and he threw the discus 47.99 m (157'5). Phil Ragan (Belmar, N.J.) won the javelin throw with a distance of 62.61 m (205'5).
In the long jump, Albert Johnson III (Painted Post, N.Y.) brought home the victory with a 7.26 m (23'10)-effort. Trevell Moxey (Lansdale, Pa.) just missed the IC4A qualifying mark in the triple jump. He won the competition with a leap of 14.48 m (47'6¼). Mike Carroll (Nanuet, N.Y.) cleared 1.96 m (6'5) to win the high jump, while Savio Paul (Yonkers, N.Y.) took third in the pole vault (4.05 m, 13'3½).
Sheldon Derenoncourt (Patchogue, N.Y.) posted a time of 49.08 seconds to win the 400 meters. The Jaspers also posted a number of second-place showings on the track. Abdias Myrtil (Wheatley Heights, N.Y.) was second in the 100 meters (11.11), Dimitri Mobley (Abington, Pa.) placed second in the 400 meter hurdles (56.31) and Jacob Adams (Yonkers, N.Y.) grabbed the silver in the 3000 meter steeplechase (9:57.57). Manhattan also took second place in the 4x100 meter relay, with the quartet of Myrtil, Johnson, Neil Pinnock (Yonkers, N.Y.) and Tyrek Barney (Hempstead, N.Y.) recording a time of 42.75 seconds.
The Jaspers finished with 198 points to easily win the team competition.
It was also a good day on the track for Manhattan's female sprinters. Ashley Bowman (Elmont, N.Y.) won the 100 meters in a time of 12.27 seconds and Heidy Palacios (Yonkers, N.Y.) posted a time of 56.76 seconds to take first place in the 400 meters. The Jaspers then went 1-2-3-5 in the 200 meters, with Cara Rostant (Valley Stream, N.Y.) taking first (24.54), Palacios finishing second (25.12) just ahead of Bowman (25.13), and Ieva Vitola (Jekabpils, Latvia) grabbing fifth place (25.61).
Manhattan also went 1-2 in the women's 100 meter hurdles. Doreen Horschig (Lumpzig, Germany) was first in a time of 14.61 seconds, while Andrea Nyback's (Koping, Sweden) 14.69 clocking was good for second place. Nyback also finished third in the long jump (5.54 m, 18'2). In the women's 800 meters, Emmy Koskinen (Sodertalje, Sweden) crossed the line first (2:18.28), and Janie Turek (Mt. Sinai, N.Y.) took third in the 400 meter hurdles (1:06.85).
In the women's triple jump, Jordan Rand (Colorado Springs, Colo.) grabbed third place with a distance of 11.14 m (36'6¾). In the women's pole vault, Karolin Wagner (Ribbesbuettel, Germany) cleared 3.25 m (10'8) to place second, and Sarah Moore (Irvington, N.Y.) finished fourth with a leap of 2.95 m (9'8).
The Jaspers earned 123 points in the women's team competition, but were edged out by host Ramapo, which tallied 136 points.
Manhattan also sent a handful of competitors to the Sam Howell Invitational at Princeton University's Weaver Stadium on Friday night. In the men's hammer throw, Anastas Papazov (Balchik, Bulgaria) bettered his previous top mark on the season, finishing third with a distance of 66.08 m (216'9).
The Jaspers begin their championship season next weekend with the annual Metropolitan Outdoor Championships at Rutgers University. The two-day meet gets underway on Friday and concludes on Saturday. Manhattan's men are the defending Metropolitan Champions.
