NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – For the first time in memory, weather back in Ithaca surpassed the weather in California that greeted the Cornell track teams when they arrived in Orange County on Friday. And unfortunately, the late winter storm that hit the West Coast this weekend caused havoc with the Northridge Invitational on Saturday.

Nevertheless, the Big Red competed across the board throughout the day's driving rain and windy conditions and came away with very solid efforts to begin the outdoor season. And with outstanding weather forecast for the rest of the week's trip, the team is looking forward to a great week of training and then a meet at UC-Irvine next week.

The Cornell men won six events and had three IC4A qualifiers despite the rough conditions. Competing in a heavy downpour, the 4X100 of sophomore Chris Bain, junior Jedidiah Adarquah-Yiadom, senior Chase Aaronson and sophomore Kinsley Ojuwku ran 42.64 to place first to get the meet off to a good start for the Big Red.

In the individual events, Cornell had a double-winner as freshman Stephen Mozia had a pair of IC4A qualifiers in winning the shot put (54' 9 1/2” No.10 all-time at Cornell) and the discus (156' 2”). Senior co-captain Bob Belden was second in the discus at 155” 6' and fourth in the shot put at 49' 1 1/2”.

Senior co-captain Nick Huber also had a very good day, winning the 110 hurdles in an IC4A-qualifying 14.85 after placing second in the 400 hurdles in 54.55. Classmate and fellow co-captain Dan Hagberg was second in the 110 hurdles at 14.94, while junior Zach Zeller was third in 14.16 and freshman Jon Hanninen was fourth in 15.40. Hanninen was also sixth in the 400 hurdles in 55.41.

The Cornell middle distance crew had a strong day. Sophomore John Schilkowsky won the 800 in 1:53.84 and junior Nick Wade led a 1-2-3 sweep in the 1500. Wade ran 3:58.38 (closing in 61 seconds for the final 400) and was followed by sophomore Will Weinlandt (4:00.32) and freshman Rutger Admirand (4:07.16). In the 400, freshman Cisco Olloqui was seventh in 50.40 and senior Tom Randall was ninth in 50.84.

Field events were impacted even more by the inclement weather, with the pole vault, high jump and triple jump all canceled. The Big Red did have a trio of competitors in the long jump. Sophomore Montez Blair was third at 21' 11”, followed by classmate Steven Bell (fourth, 21' 8”) and senior Josh Cusick (fifth, 20' 10”).

The team will train at UC Irvine all week and then compete at the UC Irvine Spring Break Invitational on Friday and Saturday.
