Date: 03-03-2012 (9:00-12:45-girls) Location: Cornell University, Barton Hall

Meet Info
For the second year in a row, Cornell's hallowed old Barton Hall will serve as the stage for the NY State Indoor Championship. This year the girls go first, with events starting off at 9:00am on Saturday, March 3rd, and the boys cutting in around 2:00. There are warm up periods of about an hour before each session.

The meet serves as both a championship for the NYSPHSAA confederation schools, but also as the Federation championship for the PSAL public schools, CHSAA Catholic schools, and AIS private schools of the NY City region (who have already held their championship meets), in conjunction with the statewide NYSPHSAA schools. Medals for the top 6 places are awarded for both championships, so NYSPHSAA athletes are eligible to bag two medals in an event. Each of the NYSPHSAA sections has recently held a State Qualifier meet to determine which 2 to 3 athletes (if the 3rd place finisher meets qualification standards) will represent the section at States in each event. Only one relay team advanced from each section. The girls have one extra event than the boys, the 1500m race walk. The 55m sprint and hurdle events have preliminary-semifinal-final rounds, while the 300m sprint and 4x200m and 4x400m relays have preliminary and final rounds. An extra event, the intersectional medley relay (1000m-200m-600m-1600m) is also run but is not reviewed here.

2011 Synopsis
During the indoor season last year, the NY girls made big statements, compiling the top times in the nation in 8 of the events and distances they normally compete at. Cornwall's Aisling Cuffe topped the charts with a state record in the 3000m that was tops in the US, and she also had the best 2 mile time while winning the US Nationals that was 23 seconds ahead of the best official 3200m time. Other NY girls who stood out on the national stage were Benjamin Cardozo's Sandrae Farquharson in the 300m, her teammates Claudia Francis in the 600m and Lateisha Philson in the 55m hurdles, Arlington's Hayley McMahon in the 1500m, Shoreham-Wading River's Danielle Opatovsky in the 1500m race walk, and the Medgar Evers 4x200 and 4x400 relay teams. Medgar Evers won the US Nationals 4x400 relay, and a team from Garden City claimed the sprint medley relay race.

Not all of the NY top athletes were at the State meet at Cornell last year because they were being held out to prepare for Nationals, but the ones who were there put on a great show. Fierce competition erupted in 9 of the 13 individual events. The distance races all had great battles, as Cuffe held off North Shore's Samantha Nadel in the 3000m by 3 1-2 seconds in a time of 9:29.89 to break Molly Huddle's overall 3000m record and crush Nicole Blood's indoor mark. Mamaroneck's Anima Banks outdueled Bronxville's Mary Cain by less than a second in the 1000m, and Kelsey Margey (then of Harborfields) beat Brianna Nerud of North Shore by 1 1-2 seconds. Other close battles included Klarissa Ricks (3rd at Nationals) of Holy Names win over Beacon's Tori Alexander in the 55m, Mount Vernon's Tanaya Yarde's decison in the 300m over White Plains' Kamilah Williams, and other close wins included Suffern's Sarah Bowens' in the long jump, Cornwall's Olivia Jebb's in the triple Jump, Valley Stream's Joanne Imbert's in the high jump, and Megan Clark of James O'Neill in the pole vault. Among the dominating winners were Cardozo's Claudia Francis in the 600m (2nd at Nationals in 800m), Williamsville South's Kailyn Arcury in the 55m hurdles, Bishop Loughlin's Adrienne Alexander in the shot put, and SWR's Danielle Opatovsky walked off with the 1500m RW win.

Cornwall was the only school to take two event championships, with Cuffe taking the 3000m and Jebb winning the triple jump. Jebb was also the biggest surprise winner, as she was not rated among the top 5 TJers going into States. Holy Names' Ricks almost pulled out a double win as she took the 55m and fell 1.75 inches short of Bowens in the long jump.

2012 Overview
Going into States, NY runners (and walkers) have the lead times in the nation in 6 events that they commonly compete at. Summarizing the terrific power that will be displayed on Saturday morning:

  • -- One of those events with a national leader is the 1000m, in which Bronxville's Mary Cain is the leader though she is passing on the race at States. Mary isn't exactly being contrary though, as she also leads the nation at the 1500m, which she will be running, though oddly as only the 3rd seed (explanation in event summary). Cain also is in the US top 10 in the 1 Mile and 3000m rankings.
  • -- The 1000m will be well-represented by States reigning champ, Anima Banks of Mamaroneck, who holds the nation's #2 time. Cardozo's Alexis Panisse is at #3, but will be running the 3000m, where she is rated #7 nationally. Both Banks and Panisse are in the US Top 10 in the 600m also. Despite all the high national rankings at a range of distances for Panisse, she still hasn't advanced beyond 63 feet outdoors in the javelin from a throw in her sophomore year, so she isn't quite superwoman yet.
  • -- Medgar Evers' Kadecia Baird holds the nation's best mark in the 300m and is top seed in an event that will not include US #2 New Rochelle's Deajah Stevens and Baird's teammate, US #5 Sandrae Farquharson. There is still dynamite potential here, because US #4 Kyle Plante of Colonie will be challenging Baird.
  • -- Garden City's Molly Josephs is the nation's top 1500m race walker, and her team holds the country's best 4x800m relay time, though Joseph does not run or walk on the squad.
  • -- Another Molly -- Molly Shapiro of Emma Willard -- is stepping out in 9th place nationally in the triple jump with a distance a few inches shy of 40 feet.
  • -- Samantha Nadel of North Shore holds the best 3000m time nationally but her season ended prematurely. Teammate Brianna Nerud who is ranked 6th nationally in the 3000m will be jumping into the 1500m, .in which she is 10th ranked.
  • -- NY girls hold 7 of the nation's top 10 times in the 600m this year, with Cardozo's Panisse at #2 and Bay Shore's Jessica Gelibert at #3.
  • -- In the 55m hurdles, Cardozo's Akayla Anderson and reigning States champ Kailyn Arcury of Williamsville South are among the top 10 in the nation and their season's best are .01 seconds apart.
  • -- The 4x200 and 4x400 relay teams for Medgar Evers could be favored for a double because the highly seeded squads may well be able to outfresh the competition. Fayetteville-Manlius could come up for a 4x400 and 4x800 double.

The competition in many of the events should be heated, and there may be a considerable shuffling of the order of finalists in some of the events from those listed below. The jumping and pole-vaulting events always see some turmoil among the leaders. Also note that some of the top athletes and relay teams competed at Eastern States on Tuesday, so there could be an effect (plus or minus) on performance at States. Should be another great meet.

55m

Event Info: 2011 Winner: Klarissa Ricks (Holy Names) 7.01, State Record: 6.82, State Qualifier Mark: 7.44
Statement: With top NY sprinter Lateisha Philson of Cardozo again sitting out from States this year and three of the other top 5 ranked runners failing to qualify for the meet, the top seed is Valencia Hannon, who took 3rd last year and is 4th ranked in NY. Challenging her will likely be Monique Green, Robbi Rogers (seed mark from Tuesday's Eastern States meet), and Kimberly Bailey, who have all edged below 7.20. Also in the running is reigning 55m hurdle champ Kailyn Arcury, who finished 7th in the 55m sprint last year.

300m

Event Info: 2011 Winner: Tanya Yarde (Mount Vernon) 39.67, State Record: 37.59, State Qualifier Mark: 41.94
Statement: US #1 Kadecia Baird leads the 300m field and also has her eye on a double gold as part of Medgar Evers 4x400m squad. Chasing close behind is Section 2's top qualifier and US #4 ranked Kyle Plante, reigning champ Tanaya Yarde, and last year's 4th place finisher Shenika King. Sounds like a dangerous group of girls.

Event Info: 2011 Winner: Claudia Francis (Benjamin Cardozo) 1:30.97, State Record: 1:29.65, State Qualifier Mark: 1:38.74
Statement: Though NY top ranked and US #2 Alexis Panisse has run off to do the 3000m, US #3 Jessica Gelibert should be able to take the star role as the only one with a sub 1:33.0 time. Fellow Long Islander Emma Gallagher is less than a second behind, and still another islander Olicia Williams is 3rd seeded after a 3rd place in the 1000m last year, with S1 SQ champ Erin Jaskot rounding out the quartet who have gone under 1:35.0. Shannon McDonnell finished 4th last year and is the top returning runner from 2011 States.

1000m

Event Info: 2011 Winner: Anima Banks (Mamaroneck) 2:51.75, State Record: 2:48.44, State Qualifier Mark: 3:02.24
Statement: NY has 10 of the nation's top 25 runners in the 1000m, and 5 of them will be competing in the race at States. Reigning champ and US #2 (behind Bronxville's Mary Cain) Anima Banks leads the pure power runner group along with Taylor Driscoll and Rachel Paul, while Emily O'Neil and Meredith Rizzo represent the long-striding bounders. Following up on the great duel last year between Banks and Cain, the 1000m should again be one of the highlight races, with Banks very capable of breaking the state record. And with Amber Goodspeed running near the top, you know the race will be fast.

1500m

Event Info: 2011 Winner: Kelsey Margey (Harborfields) 4:34.34, State Record: 4:22.1, State Qualifier Mark: 4:49.54
Statement: This is likely the first instance ever that the runner with the top 1500m time in the nation is seeded only 3rd in her States race, but the top two seed times for this event are actually converted from pretty spectacular mile times.

In another race that could be an all-time classic, three top runners with big marks this year could collide in an event in which NY runners own 21 of the top 25 times in the nation. Reigning champ Kelsey Margey will be trying to turn back both the runner who beat her for the XC Class C State title, Mary Cain, and a fellow Long Islander who was 3rd in the Millrose Games Mile and 2nd to Margey at States last year, Brianna Nerud. It could be a stretch, but Molly Huddle lost her 3000m State record to Aisling Cuffe last year, and this year her 1500m record from 2002 could be in danger. Seeking to stay in range will be 4th seed Gianna Frontera (also listed for 3000m) and last year's 3rd and 6th place finishers, Emily Waligurski and Holly Cavalluzzo.

3000m

Event Info: 2011 Winner: Aisling Cuffe (Cornwall) 9:29.89, State Record: i>9:29.89, State Qualifier Mark: 10:21.14
Statement: After correcting for Alexis Panisse's seed time from the official listings, we're left with three top seeds who have run within a second of each other for their season's best. Alexis Panisse, Keelin Hollowood, and Christie Rutledge sport the #5, #6, and #7 best times in the nation behind four other NY girls who are either injured or off running in other races. Expect to see a crowded front pack for quite a while into the race as North Shore duo Elizabeth Caldwell and Jessica Donohue, Gianna Frontera (if she's running here), Kate Zendell and Katie Treichel have all done around 10:10 or under.

55m hurdles

Event Info: 2011 Winner: Kailyn Arcury (Williamsville South) 7.96, State Record: 7.76, State Qualifier Mark: 8.74
Statement: Reigning champ Kailyn Acury is set to take on a big group of downstate hurdlers, as she stands at #10 nationally. The battle at the top seems to be between her and US #7 Akayla Anderson, last year's 3rd place finisher and the only hurdler to break 8.0 this season. Anderson's freshman teammate Sandreka Bancroft is also quickly emerging, and last year's 5th place finisher Brittney Webley could also come up strong.

1500m Race Walk

Event Info: 2011 Winner: Danielle Opatovsky Shoreham-Wading River 6:51.57, State Record: 6:28.2, State Qualifier Mark: 7:28.24
Statement: The race walk is a specialized thing with little crossover potential to other events, so these athletes are focused on just doing the walk. The top returner from last year's States, 2011 5th place finisher Molly Josephs, has a small edge over a pack of striders. Last year's 8th place finisher Kelly Maranchuk, JI Won Kang, and Katie Michta are close behind and all will be looking to push the limits in an event where DQs (3 of 23 walkers in 2011) for loss of surface contact (or uniform issues)are just another of the walkers' obstacles. Melissa Tylock and Allison McConville are walking in the footsteps of big sisters who participated at 2011 States.

Long jump

Event Info: 2011 Winner: Sarah Bowens (Suffern) 18:11.75, State Record: 21-01.25, State Qualifier Mark: 17-02
Statement: The 6th seed in this year's long jump is the reigning champ Sarah Bowens, and she will need to really stretch it out to beat last year's 9th place finisher Mikayla Pearce, who has gone more than a foot and a half further. Janel Francis, last year's 4th place jumper Sara Ronde, Niamani Morrison, Stephanie Izard complete the top 5 seeds in a field that also includes last year's triple jump champ, Olivia Jebb. Last year Bowens hit it big on her first jump and then hung on against runner-up Katrina Ricks.

Triple jump

Event Info: 2011 Winner: Olivia Jebb (Cornwall) 37-11.0, State Record: 41-08.5, State Qualifier Mark: 36-01
Statement: Top seed and US #9 Molly Shapiro was runner-up at States last year, but she has jumped nearly two feet further this year than reigning champ Olivia Jebb. In an event that sees many of the same contestants as the long jump, Odrine Belot, Mikayla Pearce, freshman McKyla Brooks, and Sarah Bowen are also contending for the title. As the 6th seed last year, Jebb came from behind to win the event on her last jump, so she has some experience in pressure situations.

Shot Put

Event Info: 2011 Winner: Adrienne Alexander (Bishop Loughlin) 43-00.25 , State Record: 50-06, State Qualifier Mark: 37-07
Statement: Defending champ Adrienne Alexander and last year's 5th place finisher Erica Williams are leading the shot putters, but there are a number of others such as Briyah Brown and Adaora Nwodili who could send the orb to the farthest reaches. Alexander certainly doesn't hesitate to push the boundaries on her throws as she fouled on 4 of 6 throws last year but launched the big winner on her 3rd toss.

4x200m Relay

Event Info: 2011 Winner: Medgar Evers 1:43.53, State Record: 1:37.73
Statement: Medgar Evers is looking for a repeat, and with a squad that includes three freshman and a group that has been dedicated to winning the event, they will be strongly favored. Mount Vernon is the main pursuer, but Tanaya Yarde, Robbi Rogers, and Lexus Harney are among the top seeds in sprints and hurdles events, and they will be challenged to pull up one more big effort in the day's final run after many tough heats in individual events. The actual times at States for all the relays tend to be well behind the seed times that were usually set at big invitationals where they were the showcase event for the runners.

4x400m Relay

Event Info: 2011 Winner: Colonie 3:58.28, State Record: 3:43.63
Statement: Garden City and Medgar Evers are on the same pace this year, but as in the 4x200m, Evers may have more fresh legs dedicated to the event. Garden City's Emma Gallagher, Taylor Hennig, and Katie O'Neill have 600m or 1000m stints, while only 300m favorite Kadecia Baird has individual duties for Medgar Evers. Fayetteville-Manlius's experienced group is also pointed for this race and have run under last year's winning time, while reigning champ Colonie led by 300m star Kyle Plante could also come up for a repeat.

4x800m Relay

Event Info: 2011 Winner: Shenendehowa 9:12.41, State Record: 8:53.67
Statement: North Shore's top-seed time was run with Samatha Nadel in the lineup, and with Viking's #1 out and Brianna Nerud, Elizabeth Caldwell, and Jessica Donohue all having individual events to handle, the way could be open for Fayetteville-Manlius with a top four of Jillian Fanning, Katie Sischo, Heather Martin, and Katie Brislin who are focusing on this event and have a seed time under last year's winning time. Led by 1000m favorite Anima Banks, Mamaroneck should hang close along with Saratoga's deep squad.
