Date: 03-03-2012 (2:00-6:00-boys) Location: Cornell University, Barton Hall

Meet Info

For the second year in a row, Cornell's hallowed old Barton Hall will serve as the stage for the NY State Indoor Championship. This year the girls go first, with events starting off at 9:00am on Saturday, March 3rd, and the boys cutting in around 2:00. There are warm up periods of about an hour before each session.

The meet serves as both a championship for the NYSPHSAA confederation schools, but also as the Federation championship for the PSAL public schools, CHSAA Catholic schools, and AIS private schools of the NY City region (who have already held their championship meets), in conjunction with the statewide NYSPHSAA schools. Medals for the top 6 places are awarded for both championships, so NYSPHSAA athletes are eligible to bag two medals in an event. Each of the NYSPHSAA sections has recently held a State Qualifier meet to determine which 2 to 3 athletes (if the 3rd place finisher meets qualification standards) will represent the section at States in each event. Only one relay team advanced from each section. The 55m sprint and hurdle events have preliminary-semifinal-final rounds, while the 300m sprint and 4x200m and 4x400m relays have preliminary and final rounds. An extra event, the intersectional medley relay (1000m-200m-600m-1600m) is also run but is not reviewed here.

Note that all info is based on what was available as of Wednesday morning.

2011 Synopsis
Although the NY guys don't have quite the firepower of the girls on the national scene, they did ring up some big times last year. Zavon Watkins was a standout with not only the US best 1000m time, but he also took the national championship in the 800m. Strymar Livingston of NYC's Christopher Columbus set a national record in the 600m at the PSAL Championship, and his school claimed 2nd at Nationals in the sprint medley relay. Medgar Evers' Andre Jordan posted the top time nationally in the 300m.

None of the three NY-based national leaders were able to post win at States last year, and the boys' competitions didn't tend to be quite as close as the girls events. The most dominating winner had to be Francis Lewis's Chukwuebuk Enekwechi, who beat the rest of the field by more than 9 feet in the shot put and later placed 5th at Nationals. The closest of the running events was the 300m, where Wilson Magnet's Ismail El-Amin nipped Christopher Columbus's Davion Wint by .01 seconds. In the field events, Arlington's Jordan Yamoah (3rd at Nationals) won on misses in the pole vault at 15 ft over Pine Bush's Nick O'Brien, and Joe Postwaite of Gates-Chili took the high jump at 6-08 on misses over Alex Bowen of Beacon. Other winners included Spring Valley's Winslow Dorsainvil in the 55m, Vestal's Josh Miller in the 600m, Marcellus's Jesse Garn by a lean in the 1000m, Billy Gabriel of West Genesee in the 1600m comfortably along with Greene's Chad Noelle in 3200m (5th at Nationals) by a big margin, and Sheepshead Bay's Richmond Ahadzi in the 55m hurdles. Other field event winners included Cory Cox of East Rochester in the long jump (5th at Nationals) and Shane Green of Erasmus Hall in the triple jump. Relay winners included Mount Vernon in the 4x200m (1st at Nationals), Longwood in the 4x400m, and Shaker in the 4x800m.

Top surprise winners were probably El-Amin and Postwaite, neither of whom was rated in the top group entering States.

2012 Overview

The NY boys are having another solid year, with some events ranging on explosive. Summarizing some of the key points head into States:

  • Strymar Livingston of Christopher Columbus is again leading the US in the 600m after breaking his own national record.
  • The boys of the Boys and Girls team of NYC has the country's top 4x400m squad and Newburgh Free Academy is at #4 in the nation.
  • Arlington's Sibby Hanson has the US best official 3200m time, which he set at the Section 1 Qualifier, though it is behind a group of converted 2-mile times, with Saint Benedict-NJ's Edward Cheserek at the top in the nation.
  • Last year's 300m States champ, Ismail El-Amin of Wilson Magnet, is rated among the top-10 long jumpers in the nation, and this year he has qualified in both events at States.
  • Last year's 800m national champ Zavon Watkins of Liverpool has had an interesting year, and he will run again at States in the 1000m instead of the 1600m, in which he is among the US leaders.
  • A potential great battle is shaping up in the 300m, where Mount Vernon's Steven Gayle and Midwood's Andy Nicolas are ranked 6th and 7th nationally.
  • In the 55m, Spring Valley's Winslow Dorsainvil is back to defend his title, and last year he was the male athlete who came the closest to breaking an NY record at States, missing by just .02 seconds.

The listings below for each event are just a general overview of how the event is shaping up, and the actual finishes will probably be somewhat different. Some guys may have a little too much on the plate at States between individual heats and relays, others may have pushed a little too hard at recent qualifiers and championships or, possibly like Watkins, are ready to push far beyond their seed times. Last year only 6 of the 15 events were won by the pre-meet seeded favorites, and 6 of the events were also won by the 3rd or 4th seeded competitor. Also note that some of the top athletes and relay teams competed at Eastern States on Tuesday, so there could be an effect (plus or minus) on performance at States. At States meets, the juices flow and stuff happens.

The "SQ Result" is the State Qualifier result for NYSPHSAA athletes in their sections or the confederation championship result for PSAL, CHSAA, and AIS athletes.

55m

Event Info: 2011 Winner: Winslow Dorsainvil (Spring Valley) 6.33, State Record: 6.31, State Qualifier Mark: 6.74
Statement: Winslow Dorsainvil missed the State record by .02 seconds while taking States last year, and his seed time for this year is .01 better than last year. Looks like he's in range of claiming NY's All-time Fastest Guy title. Wayne Gordon placed 3rd last year, so along with Tyler O'Bryant and Brandon Vanderbrook, there should be a wave of guys burning the rubber (or Recaflex) next to Dorsainvil.

300m

Event Info: 2011 Winner: Ismail El-Amin (Wilson Magnet) 34.78, State Record: 33.27, State Qualifier Mark: 36.74
Statement: The 300m is one of the most open events, with 7 guys who have run under 35.0, but none of the top seeds were in last year's States final round. One guy who was there is the reigning champ Ismail El-Amin, who was seeded 8th last year and comes in at 9th this year, but he also is the 2012 top seed in the long jump. Steven Gayle and Andy Nicolas are ranked #6 and #7 in the US and will be the favored duo here.

600m

Event Info: 2011 Winner: Josh Miller (Vestal) 1:20.75, State Record: 1:17.64, State Qualifier Mark: 1:24.74
Statement: For the second year in a row, Strymar Livingston enters States after recently settiing the national record in the 600m. Last year he finished 3rd as the prohibitive favorite and then went on to finish 5th in the 800m at Nationals. Livingston will be keeping an eye on Giancarlo Sainato who finished 7th last year and has run almost a second faster this year than last year's winning States time.

1000m

Event Info: 2011 Winner: Jesse Garn (Marcellus) 2:29.28, State Record: 2:24.1, State Qualifier Mark: 2:35.74
Statement: The guy with the 40th fastest time in NY is not the one who usually gets the attention at States, but when he is the boys Millrose Mile winner and owns the top 1600m time in the state, he does kind of stick out. Zavon Watkins was the overwhelming favorite going into States last year but was outleaned at the wire by Jesse Garn. It's hard to bet against him, but Brian Crimmins (also listed for 1600m), Kieran Brennan, and Cory McCarty are running super times and are set to pull a Garn if Watkins can't shift into top gear.

1600m

Event Info: 2011 Winner: Billy Gabriel (West Genesee) 4:16.91, State Record: 4:05.50, State Qualifier Mark: 4:28.74
Statement: The 1600m has an NYC feel to it, as Thomas Awad, Konrad Surkont, and Daniel Galford all hale from the CHSAA and PSAL conferences. Awad is again the favorite this year after finishing 2nd to last year's 4th seed Billy Gabriel at States in 2011. The top 5 have all gone 4:20 or under, so this could be a great strategic duel with a final lap breakaway like last year. Note that Awad is also listed for the 3200m.

3200m

Event Info: 2011 Winner: Chad Noelle (Greene) 9:08.29, State Record: 8:50.40, State Qualifier Mark: 9:42.24
Statement: Sibby Hanson and Eric Holt dueled in the Section 1 SQ as both crushed their PRs and emerged with likely the top two seeds in the 3200m if Thomas Awad again opts for the 1600m. Hanson's seed time (the top unconverted 3200m time in the US)  is more than a minute faster than the time he posted at States while finishing 26th last year, but now he and Holt will have to see if they can pull out another big performance a week later when top runners like Austin Lane, Dan Lennon, and Nick Ryan ran far more comfortable paces at their SQs. Kris Moran is the top returning finisher from last year, when he placed 7th.

55m hurdles

Event Info: 2011 Winner: Richmond Ahadzi (Sheepshead Bay) 7.44, State Record: 7.22, State Qualifier Mark: 7.94
Statement: This year's favorite in the 55m hurdles, Tyriek Johnson, was seeded 3rd last year but scratched. This year's top group are heavy on seniors, and Andre Hewitt and Rudje Beckford return after placing 5th and 7th last year. The 55m tends to go pretty close to the seeded order, and Cory Keefe and Ronald Morrow are having strong years. Second seeded Jay Herbert made a gigantic leap and ran close to the State record at Section 7 SQ with a 7.3 time converted to 7.54.

Event Info: 2011 Winner: Cory Cox (Rochester East) 23-03, State Record: 25-07.75, State Qualifier Mark: 21-06
Statement: Ismail El-Amin won the 300m at States last year and now is the top seeded long jumper, along with trying to defend last year's crown. That could be a tough double, since he is also a member of Wilson Magnet's 4th seeded 4x200m relay team. Event Info: 2011 Winner: Longwood 3:24.38, State Record: 3:15.72
Statement:  Boys and Girls is ranked #1 in the US with a time set while beating Newburgh at the New Balance Games. The two teams should have another great fight here. Third seed Mount Vernon may not have enough legs to challenge here as it is also trying to defend its 4x200m crown, and star Steven Gayle is listed for both squads.

4x800m relay

Event Info: 2011 Winner: Shaker 7:55.70, State Record: 7:42.22
Statement: Shaker has the best time this year and is ranked #4 in the US, but the question will be whether with Christian Delago in the 1000m and Mike Libruk in the 3200m the Bison can hold off Collegiate and Pawling squads that are probably completely fresh.
