ITHACA, N.Y. – With the Deneault family on hand, the Cornell track and field teams paid tribute to the memory of the late Marc Deneault with the Deneault Memorial Invitational on Saturday in Barton Hall. Playing host to 15 schools, the Big Red had 17 event wins and over 40 ECAC/IC4A qualifiers.
Most Valuable Performer awards were handed out by the Deneault family at the conclusion of the meet and the Big Red claimed three of the four possible honors. Most Valuable Field athlete for the men was Cornell freshman
Stephen Mozia, who shattered a 37-year-old school record in the shot put, heaving 62' 8” to also break the Barton Hall Record.
Most Valuable Track athlete for the men went to Mozia's classmate, Rutger Admirand, who won the 800 in commanding fashion, placing first by over two seconds in 1:51.56.
On the women's side, yet another Cornell freshman won the Most Valuable Track athlete award as Katie Woodford broke a 20-year-old Barton Hall record and was well under the old school record in the 300, as she ran an impressive 39.11.
Most Valuable Field event female honors went to Buffalo's Kristy Woods, who claimed both the shot put and the weight throw with high-caliber marks.
The Cornell men were outstanding in their final tune-up for the Indoor Heps, with seven event wins and a remarkable 24 IC4A qualifiers. Leading the way was freshman
Stephen Mozia, who added nearly six inches to the school record previously held by Hall of Famer Dave Doupe '78 for the past 37 years, with his remarkable 62' 8”.
Also performing very well was senior co-captain
Bob Belden, who was second at 56' 8 3/4” and who also placed second in the weight at 58' 5 1/4”. It was a good day for the throwing group overall, as junior Bob Fiedler had another seasonal best to hit the IC4A standard with a third-place weight throw of 56' 9 1/2” and sophomore
Ben Tenpas had a personal record to qualify for IC4As with a third-place 53' 7 1/2” in the shot put.
The high jump again saw a spirited competition as sophomore
Montez Blair cleared 7' 1/4” for first while classmate Tommy Butler and senior
Chris Arlinghaus both cleared 6' 10 3/4” to get second and third. Senior
Chase Aaronson won the long jump at 23' 3 1/4” while freshman
Han Wei Chew was second at 23' 2 3/4”. Joining them as IC4A qualifiers was triple jump winner
Dan Scott, who reached 48'.
In the pole vault, sophomore
Peter Roach cleared 16' 4 3/4 in to move to No. 5 all-time at Cornell and place first. Classmate
David Kim was also an IC4A qualifier in placing second at 15' 9”.
On the track, Admirand led the way with his impressive 800 victory in 1:51.56. There were several other notable efforts in the event as five other Cornellians qualified for IC4As: junior
David McCuiston (second, 1:53.92), sophomore
Will Weinlandt (fourth, 1:54.12), senior
Chris Jakobson (fifth, 1:55.09), freshman
Ben Potts (sixth, 1:55.66) and sophomore
Eric Bice (seventh, 1:55.80).
The 60 hurdles saw a pair of very good efforts as junior Zach Zeller qualified for the IC4As and moved to No. 6 all-time at Cornell with a preliminary round 8.25 before placing third in the finals at 8.26. Freshman Jon Hanninen moved to No. 10 all-time at Cornell with a fourth-place 8.33.
Sophomore
Mike Rabbitt claimed the 400 in 49.65 and senior
Tom Randall (second, 50.08) and freshman Cisco Olloqui (third, 50.19) also hit the IC4A standard. The 4x400 team of Olloqui (49.9), sophomore
Kinsley Ojukwu (50.20), Rabbitt (50.8) and Hanninen (50.8) ran 3:21.55 for second.
