Millrose Mile Journals: Maria Seykora, Academy of Notre Dame (post-race)

Hello Everyone!

My name is Maria Seykora, and I ran in the High School Girls’ Mile at the Millrose Games on February 11. What an incredible experience!

I did certain workouts to help me prepare for the Millrose Games. The Monday before I ran 600m and 300m repeats plus one 1200m. The workout went really well and helped boost my confidence for the race. The following Wednesday I did an easier workout, which was 200m repeats at a fast but relaxed pace.

My dad, Coach Laura (Heilman), brother Thomas,
(See photo to left)and I drove up to New York City Saturday afternoon. We arrived at about five o’clock, so I had a few hours to relax before my race. I was nervous and excited when I walked into the Armory. It was neat to be at such a high caliber meet and to see many famous athletes. I watched some of the races including the 4x800m relay. Congratulations to both Strath Haven relays for running top times in the country!

For my race, I knew that the field was stacked and that this would be one of the most competitive races of my season. I made a mental note to not go out too fast in the first 400m because that has hurt me in the past.

During the race, I made a move from the back of the pack into second place just before the 800m mark. (See photo to right)

I tried to hang on to that pace, but ended up fading into 9th place. Although the last laps were tough, I was glad that I held on as long as I could and that I ran my indoor best time. Congratulations to Tori, Sara, and all the runners! Good job to Samantha Nadel for her meet record!

Best of luck to everyone this season!
