Men's Track Takes Second in Competitive Armory Meet

ITHACA, N.Y. – The Cornell men's track team finished second in a close team competition in New York City on Saturday at the Armory, squaring off against 11 other teams, including Heps rivals Princeton, Harvard and Columbia. The Tigers scored 160.5 and the Big Red tallied 147, while Harvard was third with 98.5.

Cornell demonstrated its trademark event coverage, producing Eastern qualifiers across all the event groups en route to its second-place team finish. Overall, Cornell won three events with three runner-up finishes and had a remarkable 19 IC4A qualifying efforts.

As usual, there were some very strong performances in the field. Sophomore Montez Blair led a 1-2-3 Big Red sweep of the high jump, clearing 7' 0 1/4” for first. Senior Chris Arlinghaus was second at 6' 10 3/4”, moving to No. 7 all-time at Cornell. Sophomore Tommy Butler was third at 6' 7”.

In the shot put, rookie Stephen Mozia furthered his own freshman record in the shot put with a heave of 59' 9”, his second straight week over 59 feet. Senior co-captain Bob Belden also bettered the IC4A standard, placing third at 55' 7 3/4”. And in the pole vault, sophomore Peter Roach had a nice breakthrough to clear 15' 11” for third, an IC4A qualifier. Freshman Keith Rayburn cleared 15' 5” for fifth, and sophomore David Kim was over 14' 11” to get seventh.

On the track, Cornell was led by senior co-captain Dan Hagberg, who ran a fantastic 8.00 in the 60 hurdles final to place second after earlier running 8.19 in the prelims. Hagberg's new personal best is No. 3 all-time at Cornell. Classmate Brian Freitas also claimed an IC4A qualifier with a third-place run of 64.71 in the 500. And in the 60 dash, junior Jedidiah Adarquah-Yiadom was second in 6.88 and senior Chase Aaranson was third in 6.92 as both easily bettered the Eastern standard.

Cornell had several very good efforts in the middle distance and distance events. Sophomore John Schilkowski closed well to win the mile in 4:09.57. Junior Andy Arnold was third in 4:10.93 and classmate Will McFall had a good personal record to place sixth in 4:12.55 as all three were under the IC4A qualifying time. Another junior, David McCuiston, placed fifth in the 1000 in an IC4A-qualifying 2:27.68 and in the 3K, the Big Red had three Eastern qualifiers and three personal bests: junior Matt McCullough (fifth, 8:19.50), junior Brett Kelly (ninth, 8:22.74) and sophomore Max Groves (11th, 8:26.40). In the 800, sophomore Eric Bice was sixth in 1:55.79 and senior Chris Jakobsen was seventh in 1:56.21. The 4x800 placed third in an IC4A-qualiyfing 7:48.85.

Cornell had several other scoring performances: the 4x400 was fifth in 3:22.71, freshman Cisco Olloqui was seventh in 50.10 in the 400, Belden was fifth in the weight throw at 54' 2 1/2”, sophomore Dan Scott was third in the triple jump at 46' 6 1/4” and freshman Han Wei Chew was fourth in the long jump at 21'7 1/2” and sixth in the triple jump at 44' 8 3/4”.

Next up for the Big Red is a return trip to Penn State, where the team will compete in another scored meet, the Sykes-Sabock Challenge Cup next weekend.
