Day One Recap
NEW YORK - Led by Colin Quirke's (Los Gatos, Calif.) victory in the shot put and a pair of second-place finishes by Greg Perrier (Dix Hills, N.Y.), the Manhattan College men's track & field squad took second as a team at the Metropolitan Indoor Championships at the New Balance Armory Track & Field Center on Friday. The Jasper women captured seventh place in the team standings.
Quirke, who placed seventh in the weight throw on Thursday, won the shot put with a toss of 17.37 meters (57 feet). Manhattan earned 17 total team points in the event, as Roman Ewald (Olching, Germany) secured four points with a fifth-place finish (16.11 m, 52'10¼) and Rokas Kirlys (Kamaji, Lithuania) placed sixth (15.76 m, 51'8½) to pick up three points.
Perrier notched his best time of the season in the 800 meters, finishing just off the lead in a time of 1:53.97. He then ran the anchor leg on the Jaspers' 4 x 800 meter relay squad that qualified for the IC4A Championships with a 7:46.85 clocking, good for second place. Joining Perrier on the 4 x 800 team were Anthony Colasurdo (Lanoka Harbor, N.J.), Kevin D'Emic (Rockaway Point, N.Y.) and Salim Corbin (Patterson, N.J.). D'Emic missed qualifying for the IC4A Championships in the 1000 meters by a mere .02 seconds. He placed third in a time of 2:29.97. Colasurdo also ran the 1000, finishing fifth in 2:31.42.
Abdias Myrtil (Wheatley Heights, N.Y.) scored points in three different events, taking fifth in the 200 meters (22.49) and seventh in the 60 meters (7.12) while also running a leg on the Jaspers' 4 x 400 meter relay team that finished fourth. Carlos Petrovich (Yonkers, N.Y.) ran the anchor leg on the 4 x 400 relay and captured sixth place individually in the 500 meters (1:05.99). In his Manhattan debut, Sheldon Derenoncourt (Patchogue, N.Y.) placed seventh in the 400 meters (50.49). Also collecting points on the track were Anthony Vega (Patchogue, N.Y.) in the 200 (eighth, 22.61), Billy Wilkens (Kenmore, Wash.) in the 3000 meters (fourth, 8:41.25) and the distance medley relay squad of Jacob Adams (Yonkers, N.Y.), Stephen Chantry (Williamsburg, Va.), AJ Hanifin (Long Valley, N.J.) and Corbin (seventh, 10:36.49).
In the men's long jump, Albert Johnson III (Painted Post, N.Y.) grabbed third place with a leap of 7.48 m (24'6½). The Jaspers also secured six points in the men's triple jump, as Trevell Moxey (Lansdale, Pa.) improved his season-best with an IC4A-qualifying mark of 14.49 m (47'6½) to finish fourth, while Dan Duffy (Monroe, N.Y.) placed eighth with a leap of 13.01 m (42'8¼). Mike Carroll (Nanuet, N.Y.) finished fifth in the high jump (1.94 m, 6'4¼) to go along with an eighth-place showing in the 60 meter hurdles (8.75), while Matt Perrelli (Smithtown, N.Y.) was eighth in the high jump (1.89 m, 6'2¼). In addition, Felix Siljeback-Larsen (Vasteras, Sweden) placed fifth (4262) and Ryan Degnan (Seaford, N.Y.) took sixth (4253) in the heptathlon.
Overall, Manhattan finished with 122 points, 42 behind Rutgers.
The women's team, which entered the second day of competition with 20.5 points, earned 23 more on Friday to secure seventh place in the team standings. Columbia won the women's team title with 156 points.
Cara Rostant (Valley Stream, N.Y.) grabbed 10 points with a first-place finish in the 400 meters. She improved on her season-best by .01 seconds, posting a time of 55.82 seconds. In the 500 meters, Heidy Palacios (Yonkers, N.Y.) finished sixth in 1:15.18. The duo then joined with Ashley Bowman (Elmont, N.Y.) and Ieva Vitola to take fourth in the 4 x 400 meter relay (3:53.63). Also picking up points for Manhattan was Maria Jangsten (Gothenburg, Sweden), who finished fourth in the 1000 meters (2:58.28).
The Jaspers return to the New Balance Armory Track & Field Center next weekend for the two-day New Balance Collegiate Invitational. Competition gets underway on Friday at 11 a.m., and action continues at 9 a.m. on Saturday.
