Nyback Qualifies for ECAC Championships In Two Events

Metropolitan Championships-Day One Results

RIVERDALE, N.Y. - On the first day of the Metropolitan Indoor Championships, Manhattan College's Andrea Nyback (Koping, Sweden) just missed breaking her own school record in the pentathlon, finishing with 3709 points to win the competition.  Nyback's score, a mere eight points off her previous mark, currently places her ninth on the overall NCAA list for the 2011-12 indoor season.

Nyback finished 261 points ahead of the second-place finisher to easily qualify for the ECAC Championships.  She also qualified for the ECAC Championships in the long jump on Thursday, leaping 5.74 meters (18 feet, 10 inches).  That mark, which earned her 771 points, came after Nyback established a new personal-best of 11.35 m (37'3) in the shot put.

Led by Nyback's 10 points, the Manhattan women collected 21 team points on the first day of the meet.  Karolin Wagner (Ribbesbuettel, Germany), Melissa Yap (Orchard Park, N.Y.) and Sarah Moore (Irvington, N.Y.) went 4-5-8 in the women's pole vault, while Victoria Fitzgerald (Plymouth, Mass.) picked up one team point with an eighth-place finish in the pentathlon.

The men's team earned 30 points on day one, including 20 in the weight throw.  Roman Ewald (Olching, Germany) won the event by nearly two meters, recording a best mark of 17.77 m (58'3¾).  Anastas Papazov (Balchik, Bulgaria) (fourth, 15.09 m/49'6¼), Edward Brentnall (Atlanta, Ga.) (sixth, 14.86 m/48'9) and Colin Quirke (Los Gatos, Calif.) (seventh, 14.64 m/48'0½) also scored in the weight throw.  In the men's pole vault, Brian McGovern (Yonkers, N.Y.) finished second with a clearance of 4.95 m (16'2¾) and Savio Paul (Yonkers, N.Y.) placed seventh with a leap of 4.20 m (13'9¼).

The remainder of the meet will take place at the New Balance Armory Track & Field Center on Friday, with competition getting underway at 4 p.m.
