NEW YORK - With the championship season around the corner, the Manhattan College men's and women's indoor track & field teams took part in a meet with team scoring for the first time this season at the Albany Great Dane Classic on Friday.  Led by Albert Johnson III (Painted Post, N.Y.) and Brian McGovern (Yonkers, N.Y.), the Manhattan men finished ninth in the team standings at the New Balance Armory Track & Field Center.  The Jasper women placed 12th as a team.

Competing in the long jump for the first time this season, Johnson won the event with a leap of 7.52 meters (24 feet, 8¼ inches).  With that mark, he qualified for both the Metropolitan and IC4A Championships.  Johnson also qualified for Mets in the 200 meters, finishing in a time of 22.59 seconds.  In the pole vault, McGovern took second place with a season-best clearance of 4.95 m (16'2¾).

The Jaspers collected 10 points in the men's weight throw.  Roman Ewald (Olching, Germany) led the way with a fourth-place throw of 17.88 m (58'8), earning six team points.  Edward Brentnall (Atlanta, Ga.) secured two points with an eighth-place effort of 16.26 m (53'4¼), while Anastas Papazov (Balchik, Bulgaria) finished ninth (16.01 m, 56'2½) in his Manhattan debut.  Also earning points for the Manhattan men were Trevell Moxey (Lansdale, Pa.), who finished sixth in the triple jump (14.20 m, 46'7¼), and Carlos Petrovich (Yonkers, N.Y.) with an eighth-place showing in the 500 meters (1:05.81).  Manhattan finished with 33 team points.

On the women's side, the Jaspers were led by Heidy Palacios (Yonkers, N.Y.).  Palacios finished first in the 500 (1:15.95) while also posting a Met-qualifying time of 25.65 seconds in the 200.  Cara Rostant (Valley Stream, N.Y.) placed fourth in the 200, crossing the line in 24.84 seconds to qualify for the ECAC Championships.  Overall, Manhattan had 15 points in the women's team standings.

Others achieving the Met qualifying standard on Friday were  Abdias Myrtil (Wheatley Heights, N.Y.) in the men's 200 (22.34), Anthony Colasurdo (Lanoka Harbor, N.J.) in the men's 1000 (2:33.22), Kevin D'Emic (Rockaway Point, N.Y.) in the men's mile (4:21.02), Andrea Nyback (Koping, Sweden) in the women's 60 meters (7.14) and high jump (1.55 m, 5'1) and Alexandra Cappello (Scarsdale, N.Y.) in the women's 3000 meters (10:33.72).

Those who didn't compete at the Great Dane Classic traveled to the Long Island Indoor Championship on Friday night.  At that meet, held at St. Anthony's High School in South Huntington, N.Y., Ryan Degnan (Seaford, N.Y.) competed in five events, placing second in the high jump (1.85 m, 6'0¾) and fourth in the pole vault (3.75 m, 12'3½).  Chris Schaefer (Lake Ronkonkoma, N.Y.), who attended St. Anthony's, won the men's pole vault with a mark of 4.20 m (13'9¼).  Dan Duffy (Monroe, N.Y.) secured second place in the pole vault (4.05 m, 13'3½) while also taking second in the long jump (7.20 m, 23'7½).  In the men's 800 meters, AJ Hanifin (Long Valley, N.J.) finished third in a time of 2:02.49.

Manhattan went 2-3 in the women's high jump.  Victoria Fitzgerald (Plymouth, Mass.) was second with a clearance at 1.60 m (5'3), while Sabrina Spataro (Middle Village, N.Y.) secured third place (1.55 m, 5'1).  On the track, Johanna Petruski (Toms River, N.J.) took fourth in the 3000 meters, finishing in 11:34.90, while Alyssa Windle (Redlands, Calif.) was fifth in the 1000 meters (3:21.29) and sixth in the mile (5:31.89).  In addition, Nicole Mainente (Shirley, N.Y.) grabbed sixth place in the women's 200 (28.07).

Next weekend, the Jaspers will participate in the annual Metropolitan Indoor Championships.  The meet gets underway with the weight throw, pole vault and day one of the pentathlon/heptathlon at Draddy Gymnasium on Thursday, while the remainder of the competition will be held at the New Balance Armory Track & Field Center on Friday.
