Manhattan NY - Just weeks after Edward Cheserek qualified for the Millrose Mile -running a very relaxed 4:09 after spending the first two laps in the back of the race- the junior standout from St. Benedict's Prep returned to the Armory for the Invitational 2-Mile run at the Molloy Stanner Games. The performance surpassed that of his already impressive mile qualifier, as Cheserek decidely got himself to the front of the pack from the very start of the race. From there, the junior took off at a pace that couldn't be matched. Cheserek found himself at the mile split in 4:26, with open road in front of him. Spectators knew they were in store for something great, as Cheserek began lapping the back of the pack he had only left minutes before. With 400 meters to go, he was close on the heels of 2nd place Sibby Hanson from Arlington, who would go on to finish in a respectable 9:15 himself. But all eyes were on Edward as he cruised down the final bend. The clock read an unbelieveable 8:35 as Cheserek came off the final turn. Many thought the 8:40 2-Mile record set by Gerry Lindren would be broken. As Cheserek crossed the line, he promptly looked up at the clock to see 8:43.16, and non-chalantly continued jogging the outside lanes of the track. He then exited the track, threw on his sweats, and simply went back to meet his friends in the crowd. Milesplit NY caught up with him later for a short interview, where we ask what it was like at Foot Locker, how he had planned for the race, and will he attempt to break the coveted 4:00min mile at Millrose. Watch that interview below. More highlights to follow.
